High demand for EVs in UK, new car registrations up 4.6%

According to industry statistics that was published on Wednesday, the demand for electric vehicles contributed to a 4.6% increase in the number of new automobile registrations in the United Kingdom in the month of September.

According to the Society of Motor Manufacturers and Traders (SMMT), registrations during the month increased to 225,269 units from 215,312 units a year earlier. Despite this increase, registrations are still 34.4% lower than they were before the pandemic.

The automotive industry has been thrown into disarray as a result of a rise in the cost of living in Britain and the impact of continuing chip shortages around the world.

However, according to SMMT Chief Executive Officer Mike Hawes, “the overall market remains sluggish as supply chain concerns continue to hamper model availability.

“Whilst the industry is working hard to address these difficulties, the long-term recovery of the market also depends on healthy consumer confidence and economic stability,” Hawes continued. “Whilst the industry is working hard to address these issues, the long-term revival of the market also depends on…”

Even though SMMT anticipates a slower growth rate for the segment compared to the beginning of the year, the monthly volume of registrations for battery electric vehicles increased by 16.5% in September.
