Release Dr Yang Jun from detention: Australia asks China

“Dr Yang Jun, an Australian citizen, has been held in China for four years. We are thinking of Dr Yang and his family”, said Senator Penny Wong, the Australian minister for foreign affairs.

On May 27, 2021, Dr Yang was the subject of a secret trial in Beijing; he is still awaiting the outcome.

The persistent holdups, in his case, are incredibly upsetting to the Australian government.
Since Dr Yang’s detention, the Australian government has demanded that, by international standards and China’s legal commitments, Dr Yang be treated with fundamental standards of justice, procedural fairness, and humane treatment.

The Australian government will keep fighting for Dr Yang’s rights and well-being at the highest levels and assisting him and his family with consular matters.

Dr Yang Jun, a prominent Chinese human rights lawyer, has been detained in China since July 2015. His detention has sparked outrage from the international community, who have called for his release.

Dr Yang Jun was arrested on July 10, 2015, in Hangzhou, China, and has been detained since. He was accused of subversion of state power and disrupting public order. Since then, there have been multiple reports of his mistreatment and torture while in detention.

Dr Yang Jun is a prominent human rights lawyer and a vocal critic of the Chinese government. He advocates for independence of the legal system and the rule of law in China. Dr Yang Jun is also a Chinese Human Rights Lawyers Group member, a network of human rights lawyers in China. Dr Yang Jun’s detention has sparked international outrage and calls for his release.

In October 2015, the United Nations Working Group on Arbitrary Detention (UNWGAD) issued a statement calling for his immediate release. The report cited numerous acts of torture and mistreatment Yang faced while in detention. The US Department of State has also expressed deep concern over Dr Yang Jun’s arrest and called for his immediate release.

In a statement, US Secretary of State Mike Pompeo said, “The United States is deeply concerned about the continued detention of Dr Yang Jun and calls for his immediate release.” The European Union also expressed deep concern over Dr Yang Jun’s continued detention and called for his immediate release.

In a statement, EU High Representative for Foreign Affairs and Security Policy Federica Mogherini said, “The EU is deeply concerned about the continued detention of Dr Yang Jun and calls for his immediate release.”

Despite the international pressure, Dr Yang Jun remains in detention in China. His arrest has been widely condemned as violating his fundamental human rights and international law. The international community must continue to call for Dr Yang Jun’s release and for China to respect its international obligations. It is the international community’s responsibility to ensure that all individuals’ rights, including Dr. Yang Jun, are respected and protected.
