Is Indo-Pacific benefiting US?

The network of allies and partners that the United States maintains in the Indo-Pacific region is the bedrock of its strategic and integrated deterrence efforts. In his testimony before the House Armed Services Committee today, Navy Adm. John C. Aquilino, head of the United States Indo-Pacific Command, referred to this as an asymmetric advantage that China does not possess.

According to him, many countries are the United States partners in this region, in addition to the five countries that are treaty allies of the United States (Japan, Korea, Australia, the Philippines, and Thailand).

The strategy adopted by the Department of Defense is to collaborate with regional partners. “We are nations that share values and a similar way of thinking. He explained, “We have people-to-people ties, which goes beyond just the treaty allies.”

According to him, the Department of Defense (DOD) takes part in approximately 120 exercises every year with its partners and allies in the region.

“That strategy as well as approach is competition, not containment,” Aquilino remarked about China.

“War is not unavoidable, and it does not appear to be on the horizon now. Nevertheless, we are entering a period of increasing danger in this decade,” he stated.

According to Jedidiah P. Royal, who serves as the deputy secretary of defence for Indo-Pacific security affairs, China continues to engage in coercive military activities in Taiwan Strait, as well as in the South and East China seas, and further afield.

Royal says, “Deterrence in the Indo-Pacific is real and strong today because the United States military continues to remain the world’s most capable and incredible fighting force.”

He stated that the United States is acting with help in its efforts to maintain peace and stability in the region. The Japanese government is boosting its spending on defence while also developing new capabilities, such as counterstrike.

According to him, significant initiatives are being taken by the United States to modernize and strengthen its relationships with South Korea.

According to him, the Department of Defense is not only making significant investments in its defence connections with India but also working with the Philippines to improve the latter’s capabilities.

He stated that the AUKUS security pact between the United States of America, the United Kingdom of Great Britain and Northern Ireland, and Australia was an example of coordination with competent partners to build joint capabilities in the region.

According to him, the United States and Australia revealed several new force-posture initiatives in December. One of these projects included enhanced rotations of U.S. bombers and fighters at Australian sites.

“We continue to fulfil our commitments under the Taiwan Relations Act, which has formed a bedrock of peace, stability, and deterrence in the Taiwan Strait over the last four decades,” he added. “The Taiwan Relations Act has formed a bedrock of peace, stability, and deterrence in the Taiwan Strait.”

In the past ten years, each of our five regional treaty allies has significantly boosted the money they spend on their armed forces. “That is what it looks like to deliver on our shared vision,” Royal remarked.

According to Army General Paul J. LaCamera, who is in charge of the United Nations Command, Combined Forces Command, and the United States Forces in Korea, the allies of the United States are essential. “The Korean War taught we must always be ready and forward-postured with our allies,” he said.

The general stated that one of his top aims is to improve the partnership between the United States and South Korea. We can never allow ourselves to take the league for granted. Our network of allies and partners on the Korean Peninsula who share common interests is our most significant asymmetric advantage; he went on to say.
