7 years on, Australian hostage freed from West Africa

“After spending more than seven years in captivity in West Africa, I’m happy to report that Dr Kenneth Elliott has been freed. Senator Penny Wong said Dr Elliott was safe and sound and reunited with his wife Jocelyn and their kids.

The Elliott family and the Australian government have put in much effort to secure Dr Elliott’s release.

We recognize Dr Elliott and his family’s grit and resiliency in the most trying situations.

We are grateful to Australian officials for their long-term efforts to achieve Dr Elliott’s release and support for his family.

We request that the media respect Dr Elliott and his family’s request for privacy.

The family of Dr Elliott stated, “We want to thank God and everyone who has kept us in their prayers.

We express our relief that Dr Elliott is free and thank everyone who helped secure his release over the years, including the Australian government. We also pray for those still detained, wishing them release and a safe return to their loved ones.

“Dr Elliott, 88, needs space and quiet to recover and regain strength after spending many years away from home. We appreciate your sensitivity and understanding.
