168 monkey cases confirmed in Canada so far

As of Friday, Canada’s Chief Public Health Officer, Theresa Tam, verified 168 instances of monkeypox across the country.

The senior doctor noted during a health briefing that these verified instances had been reported across the country, with two cases from British Columbia, four from Alberta, twenty-one from Ontario, and 141 from Quebec.

“We continue to monitor and respond to the growing monkeypox situation, including assisting provinces and territories in their attempts to roll out targeted vaccine campaigns,” Tam said, adding that they are also trying to increase awareness about how the illness is spread.

All of the instances for which information is known and has been reported to the Public Health Agency of Canada, according to her, are male and range in age from 20 to 69 years.

The danger of exposure to the monkeypox virus, on the other hand, is not limited to any particular demographic or context. If they come into intimate contact with someone who has monkeypox or anything they have used, such as personal goods, towels, or bed linens, anyone, regardless of gender or sexual orientation, might become infected and transmit the virus, she added.

Monkeypox is a sylvatic zoonosis that may infect people. It is most commonly seen in wooded areas of Central and West Africa. According to the World Health Organization, it is caused by the monkeypox virus, which is a member of the orthopoxvirus family.
