As part of Exercise Ram Shot, which took place in February, soldiers from the 8th and 9th Battalions of the Royal Australian Regiment participated in live-fire training at the Wide Bay and Greenbank training locations in Queensland.
The live fire training was done by members while mounted and dismounted using static and dynamic drills. They included section attacks, shooting over barriers, and firing a MAG 58 general-purpose machine gun from a Bushmaster armoured mobility vehicle.
Lieutenant Daniel Kelleher stated it was an excellent opportunity to practice correcting the fundamentals in preparation for practical exercises later in the year, including Exercise Talisman Sabre.
He stated, “It’s crucial to get soldiers live-firing, especially ahead of a busy year coming up.” “It’s beneficial to get the soldiers live-firing.”
“It’s part of our bread and butter; it’s tremendously vital, and it’s fantastic for them to spend more time in a field setting,” he said. “It’s excellent for them to spend more time in a field environment.”
Private Shaun Wickham said that he had a good time during the activity and thought it was an excellent chance to form relationships with the other troops with whom he would spend much time in the field.
“It’s excellent to get hands-on tools and shoot some bullets down range at the beginning of the year,” he added. “It’s good to get out at the beginning of the year.”
It is lovely to spend some time with everyone; they are a fun group to be around, which will help bring us closer together in preparation for a busy few months.
