Sam Mostyn is new Australian governor

Anthony Albanese has announced that Sam Mostyn will assume the role of Australia’s next governor general, following King Charles’ acceptance of the prime minister’s recommendation. Mostyn, a distinguished business and community leader, will become Australia’s 28th governor general and the second woman to hold the position.

Albanese praised Mostyn as an outstanding leader, embodying the essence of modern Australia. Mostyn is set to be sworn in as governor general in July, succeeding David Hurley. Expressing deep honor at the appointment, Mostyn emphasized her commitment to representing the values and aspirations of all Australians with integrity, compassion, and respect.

Recognized for her significant contributions, Mostyn was appointed an Officer of the Order of Australia in 2021 for her exceptional service to business, community, and women. Born in Canberra and raised by a military father, she highlighted her public education background as foundational to her journey.

Mostyn’s academic pursuits at the Australian National University and her diverse career, including legal and corporate roles, have been distinguished. She holds an honorary doctorate from ANU and has served on various boards, including Transurban, Virgin Australia, and Citibank Australia. Mostyn’s leadership extends to sports, where she made history as the first female commissioner of the Australian Football League and championed the AFLW competition.

In her statement, Mostyn expressed her belief in the profound fulfillment derived from serving others, emphasizing her deep sense of purpose in serving Australia as governor general. The governor general represents the monarch in Australia, holding the highest office in the nation, and typically serves for a term of five years.
