Munich suspends flights amid heavy snowfall

Sections of southern Germany have been thrown into turmoil as a result of the heavy snowfall, and Munich, the capital city of Bavaria, has seen a blockage of both air and train transit as a result of the precipitation.

After initially deciding to suspend flights until noon on Saturday (1100 GMT), Munich Airport later stated that it will remain closed until six in the morning on Sunday. This decision was made in response to the previous decision.

One of the representatives stated that there were 760 flights that were affected by the issue. During the nocturnal hours of both Friday and Saturday, there was a snowfall that was greater than forty centimeters (16 inches), as reported by the weather services authorities.

It was requested by the authorities that the inhabitants remain inside their homes in order to guarantee their safety. The weather throughout the winter also created problems in train operations, as proven by the statement made by Deutsche Bahn, which indicated that “the main Munich station cannot be served.” This comment was made in reference to German rail operations. As a result of the fact that the majority of buses, trams, and suburban trains were not working in Munich, it was reported that travelers might anticipate delays and cancellations throughout the region.

An announcement has been made regarding the cancellation of the match that was supposed to take place between Bayern Munich and Union Berlin.

According to the Lower Bavaria police, who claimed that they carried out 350 interventions relating to the weather after the storm, five people sustained minor injuries as a result of road incidents that occurred on Friday night.

A sizeable area of Germany has been suffering snowfall and temperatures that are below freezing throughout the course of the previous few days. It is projected that the most significant amounts of snow will fall on Saturday in the region of Allgau, which is situated in the southern part of the state of Bavaria. In addition, it is projected that an additional thirty to forty cm of snow will fall overnight. Throughout the course of the day, it is predicted that the situation would gradually improve.
