From January to August 17, 3.78 million tourists entered Thailand, a government official reported on Friday.
176 billion baht ($4.93 billion) in income were produced by the arrivals, which were primarily from Malaysia, India, and Singapore, according to Taweesin Visanuyothin, a representative of the COVID-19 team of the government.
According to Taweesin, Thailand would increase the 15-day visa-on-arrival period for citizens of Saudi Arabia, India, and China to 30 days starting in October. The initiative aims to stimulate the tourism industry as it emerges from a pandemic-induced depression.
Due to the pandemic, foreign visitors last year fell to just 428,000 from a record high of about 40 million in 2019, contributing to roughly 12% of GDP.
The Finance Ministry reports that the second-largest economy in Southeast Asia anticipates 8 million to 10 million arrivals this year, up from an earlier prediction of 7 million.
