A piece of the wedding cake for Princess Diana and King Charles is being auctioned off!
There were more over 3,000 guests for the 1981 royal nuptials. According to the media, one of them was a visitor by the name of Nigel Ricketts, who passed away the previous year.
Now that the 41-year-old wedding cake piece is about to be auctioned off, it has been discovered that Nigel had maintained it.
Dore and Rees Auctions in the UK will hold an auction for the cake.
The piece of cake has a pre-sale estimate of GBP 300, which is more than Rs. 27,000, according to the media (as per the current conversion rate).
Although the cake is still in its original box, it is expected to sell for considerably more.
The slice appears to have originated from the centerpiece fruitcake, which had five layers and was a whopping five feet tall, according to media, even though there were 23 formal wedding cakes produced for the event.
In 2014, a slice of the same cake went for GBP 1,375, or more than INR 1,27,000 (as per current day conversion rate).
According to the media, Ricketts and other members of the royal household banded together to buy Charles and Diana a writing table as a wedding gift, and Charles seemed ecstatic about the gift.
A handwritten thank-you card for the royal servants is also posted on the Dore and Rees website. It states, “Diana and I are so grateful beyond words that you took the time to look for something so incredibly helpful. And I can guarantee that no matter where it ends up, we will treasure it!”
On July 29, 1981, King Charles III and Princess Diana exchanged vows. The marriage was highly tumultuous, but it was broadcast to millions of viewers and even dubbed the “Wedding of the Century.” Four years before to their formal divorce, Charles and Diana divorced in 1992.
