In response to recent media reports suggesting a potential relaxation of its longstanding alcohol prohibition, Saudi Arabia has reaffirmed its commitment to maintaining the ban during the 2034 FIFA World Cup. The kingdom emphasized that no alcohol will be available in stadiums, hotels, restaurants, or any public venues throughout the tournament.
The speculation originated from a report by a wine blog, which claimed that Saudi authorities were considering allowing alcohol sales in tourist settings as part of reforms leading up to the World Cup. However, the Saudi government swiftly denied these claims, stating that the reports were unfounded and lacked credible sources.
Prince Khalid bin Bandar Al Saud, Saudi Arabia’s ambassador to the United Kingdom, addressed the issue in an interview with radio. He stated, “Rather like our weather, it’s a dry country. At the moment, we don’t allow alcohol, but plenty of fun can be had without it. It’s not 100% necessary.” He further emphasized that while visitors are welcome to enjoy themselves within the country’s cultural boundaries, Saudi Arabia does not intend to alter its laws or traditions to accommodate external expectations.
The kingdom’s strict prohibition of alcohol, in place since 1952, is rooted in Islamic principles. Violations of this law can result in severe penalties, including fines, imprisonment, and deportation.
This stance contrasts with the approach taken by Qatar during the 2022 FIFA World Cup, where alcohol was available in select hotels and fan zones, despite being banned in stadiums. Saudi Arabia’s decision underscores its commitment to preserving its cultural and religious values, even as it prepares to host a major international sporting event.
The clarification aims to set clear expectations for international visitors and stakeholders involved in the 2034 FIFA World Cup. As the kingdom continues its Vision 2030 initiative to diversify its economy and modernize its society, it remains steadfast in upholding its cultural identity.
While the absence of alcohol may influence certain aspects of the fan experience, Saudi officials express confidence that the tournament will offer a unique and enjoyable atmosphere that aligns with the nation’s values.
