In a rare humanitarian delivery over the Gaza Strip, Jordan and the United Arab Emirates parachuted 25 tonnes of aid into northern Gaza on Sunday—marking their first joint airdrop in several months, according to a Jordanian military official. The mission came amid intensifying global outcry over a catastrophic hunger crisis, raising critical questions about the adequacy of piecemeal efforts to relieve civilians trapped in conflict.
Israel’s Coordinator of Government Activities in the Territories (COGAT) confirmed that the operation was conducted in coordination with the Israel Defense Forces (IDF), signaling a shift in policy to permit humanitarian airdrops by Jordan and the UAE after a prolonged suspension. Israeli and international sources indicate Jordan carried out the first drop, with UAE support expected to follow, though details of the sequencing remain unconfirmed.
Although authorities emphasized that the aerial deliveries are not a replacement for land-based convoys, relief agencies warn that airdrops alone are inadequate to meet Gaza’s overwhelming needs. The United Nations’ World Food Programme (WFP) has urged Israel to authorize unrestricted truck access into the territory, arguing that consistent overland aid is essential for feeding Gaza’s 2.1 million people.
To facilitate deliveries, Israel instituted controlled daily pauses—halting military operations for 10 hours in Gaza City, Deir al‑Balah and al‑Mawasi—to enable secure movement of aid via designated corridors from early morning to late evening. These “humanitarian pauses” come amid mounting international criticism that current aid access remains dangerously limited as malnutrition deaths escalate.
Official data from Gaza health authorities and UN agencies depict an accelerating famine. Reports indicate that over 90,000 women and children are suffering from acute malnutrition, with multiple deaths attributed to starvation in recent weeks alone. The WHO also flagged a spike in child fatalities in July, noting that the majority of malnutrition-related deaths occurred last month.
Despite Israel’s release of footage from the airdrop operations and statements denying deliberate denial of food to Gazans, critics—including Palestinians on the ground—call the moves tokenistic. Hamas-run local authorities characterized the drop as insufficient, saying Gaza needs open land corridors rather than “flying aerobatics”.
The WFP has reiterated that while stocks exist, systemic delays and obstructions at border crossings have restricted deliveries; since the blockade was eased in May, less than 8 percent of loaded WFP trucks have reached destinations, undermining relief capacity. In contrast, the UN emphasises that meaningful access, daily assistance, and ceasefire agreements are essential to avert further loss of life.
International figures are joining the pressure. Governments in the UK, Germany, Spain and Jordan have demanded expanded access to Gaza and unrestricted aid flow. Meanwhile, ceasefire talks remain stalled, limiting prospects for structural relief solutions.
The airdrop marks the first substantive air delivery of aid by the UAE and Jordan in months, yet international agencies, human rights advocates, and Gazans alike agree that it underscores a fractured response: when suffering is widespread, small-scale aerial deliveries—even coordinated with military authorities—may fall short of preventing a full-scale humanitarian catastrophe.
