The world-renowned Louvre Museum was temporarily closed on Sunday after a sophisticated heist saw “priceless” royal jewels stolen from its historic galleries, according to French officials.
Authorities say the theft occurred early that morning in the museum’s Apollon gallery, where historic crowns, diadems and sovereign jewellery are displayed. The raid was carried out by what officials described as a well-organised, experienced crew who entered the museum in just seven minutes.
Interior Minister Laurent Nuñez, speaking after visiting the scene, confirmed that the thieves targeted two glass display cases, using an angle grinder to cut through windows and access the valuable exhibits. He said the stolen items carry “an inestimable heritage value”.
According to the minister, the perpetrators approached the museum via a zone undergoing construction, using a truck and goods lift to gain entry. Three or four suspects reportedly fled the scene, and investigators are now reviewing security-camera footage and exploring whether the gang has been involved in other crimes.
Culture Minister Rachida Dati initially announced the incident on social media, confirming there were no injuries and that she was onsite with museum staff and police. She added that one piece of jewellery was recovered near the museum as the suspects escaped.
In response to the theft, the Louvre closed for the day “for exceptional reasons”, though museum officials declined to provide details of the total value or specific identity of the items stolen.
The robbery has shocked cultural and heritage circles not only because of the value of the items taken, but also because of the breach of security at one of the world’s most visited museums. The Louvre draws more than eight million visitors annually — ranking among the top cultural institutions globally.
The museum’s director previously raised concerns about the building’s infrastructure: in January the museum announced renovation plans after documents revealed that aspects such as temperature control, water leaks and visitor overcrowding were jeopardising the preservation of its collections.
The Paris prosecutor’s office has opened an inquiry into the theft, and investigators are treating it as a high-level operation carried out by professionals. As security crews and forensic teams work to gather evidence, the incident raises questions about the safeguarding of national cultural treasures in high-traffic tourist destinations.
In the wake of the robbery, there is heightened concern about potential follow-on crimes, both in terms of unauthorised possession and sale of national heritage objects. The incident may prompt reviews of security protocols not only at the Louvre but at cultural sites around France and beyond.
The stolen items’ historic and cultural significance means recovery may prove difficult, particularly if the jewels enter underground markets or are dismantled for parts. For now, officials hope that rapid action and international cooperation will yield results. The investigation continues.
