In contrast to the roughly 10,000 offered at Milan–Cortina, the 2024 Paris Summer Olympics distributed around 300,000 condoms to over 10,500 athletes — a figure calculated to be roughly two per athlete per day. This disparity has raised questions about planning and allocation for the Winter Games, where around 2,800 to 3,000 athletes are competing.
The practice of providing free condoms to athletes at the Olympic Village has been a long-standing tradition, dating back to the 1988 Summer Olympics in Seoul. It was introduced as part of efforts to promote awareness about sexually transmitted infections and encourage safe sex practices among competitors, many of whom live in close quarters for extended periods during the Games.
