Disappearances across Mexico have climbed alarmingly over the past decade, sparking deep concern among families, civil society groups and international observers about the country’s spiralling insecurity and the state’s capacity to respond. A recent analysis by Mexican public policy firm México Evalúa shows that the number of people reported as missing or disappeared has more than tripled in the last ten years, with over 130,000 individuals currently unaccounted for — a surge of more than 200% since 2012 that underlines a broader humanitarian emergency.
The crisis, which parallels expanding organised crime and the growing territorial control of powerful criminal networks, has devastated communities nationwide and left tens of thousands of families in limbo. Analysts link the rise not only to traditional drug trafficking violence but also to the diversification of criminal activity by gangs. Forced recruitment, human trafficking, migrant smuggling and even organ trafficking are now seen as drivers of disappearances, as cartels seek to avoid law enforcement scrutiny by making people vanish rather than leaving evidence of violent deaths.
Mexico’s official attempts to track and stem disappearances have struggled to keep pace with the scale of the problem. The federal government established the National Search Commission in 2018 and launched a public registry for missing persons to improve data collection and search efforts. However, limited funding, institutional weaknesses and political interference have hampered these efforts. At one point in 2024, the outgoing administration controversially reduced the official count of the missing, a decision that drew widespread criticism from human rights advocates who argued it obscured the true magnitude of the crisis.
Experts caution that even the official figures likely understate the scale of disappearances. Violence in many regions contributes to chronic under-reporting, while the capacity of authorities to investigate and solve such cases remains low. In 2022, more than 96% of crimes in Mexico were not resolved, according to United Nations data, highlighting a broader pattern of impunity that emboldens perpetrators and deepens the suffering of victims’ families.
In the absence of effective state action, many relatives of the disappeared have taken the search into their own hands. Grassroots collectives, often composed of mothers and siblings, comb remote areas with metal rods, scour grave sites and share information in communities and on social media, driven by the hope of finding loved ones despite overwhelming odds. Their work, though emotionally and physically exhausting, underscores the deep personal toll of the crisis.
The Mexican missing persons crisis has also drawn international attention. Independent reports and human rights organisations, including the International Committee of the Red Cross, underscore the importance of thorough investigative files for every missing person to support systematic searches and ensure information is centrally compiled and accessible. Such steps are seen as crucial to improving investigations and providing families with some measure of accountability and closure.
Yet despite these calls, the crisis shows little sign of abating. Independent estimations suggest the true number of missing could be far higher than official counts indicate, due in part to the fear many families feel about reporting disappearances or lack of awareness of the reporting process. State and federal responses remain slow and fragmented, even as violence persists in many regions and civil society continues to urge more robust action.
For Mexico, the explosive growth in disappearances is not only a matter of statistics but a deeply felt national tragedy that cuts across social and geographic lines. With families seeking answers and accountability, experts argue that confronting the crisis will require a combination of stronger institutional commitment, improved investigative practices and sustained engagement with communities affected by the loss of loved ones.
