Paris’s iconic Musée du Louvre has endured an exceptionally turbulent period, with a cascade of crises that have shaken confidence in the world’s most-visited museum and prompted a leadership overhaul, according to recent reports. The institution, famed for housing priceless works including Leonardo da Vinci’s Mona Lisa and the Venus de Milo, has faced a brutal combination of operational breakdowns, staff unrest, infrastructure failures and a sensational theft that has left its future uncertain.
At the centre of the upheaval was an audacious daylight robbery in October 2025 in which a gang of thieves stole French crown jewels worth an estimated €88 million from the museum’s Apollo Gallery in broad daylight. The daring heist, executed in just minutes, exploited glaring gaps in the Louvre’s security infrastructure, including inadequate CCTV coverage and unsecured façade access, raising profound questions about how the nation’s most cherished cultural treasures could be so vulnerably displayed. Despite several arrests, none of the stolen jewels have been recovered, deepening the institution’s reputational damage.
