European natural gas prices surged by as much as 35% after Iran launched attacks on Qatar’s Ras Laffan liquefied natural gas (LNG) facility, one of the world’s most critical energy hubs, intensifying fears of prolonged disruption to global energy supplies amid escalating tensions in the Middle East.
The sharp spike in prices came after missile and drone strikes targeted the Ras Laffan industrial complex, which accounts for a significant share of global LNG production. The attack was widely seen as retaliation for earlier strikes on Iran’s South Pars gas field, marking a dangerous escalation in the ongoing conflict involving Iran, Israel and their allies.
The damage to the Qatari facility has been substantial, with reports indicating that key processing units were hit, reducing the country’s LNG export capacity by around 17%. Experts warn that repairs could take several years, raising concerns over sustained supply shortages in international markets.
The disruption has had an immediate ripple effect across Europe, which relies heavily on LNG imports to meet its energy needs, especially after reducing dependence on Russian gas in recent years. Market analysts noted that the surge in European gas prices reflects not just the physical loss of supply but also heightened geopolitical risk and uncertainty in the Gulf region. Benchmark gas futures recorded their steepest rise in recent times, while oil prices also climbed sharply, underscoring the interconnected nature of global energy markets.
The escalation has further strained an already fragile energy landscape. The Middle East accounts for a substantial portion of global oil and gas production, and the Strait of Hormuz — a key transit route — handles nearly a fifth of global LNG shipments. Any threat to infrastructure or shipping routes in the region has immediate global consequences.
Countries across Europe have begun assessing contingency measures to secure alternative supplies. Some nations are exploring increased imports from the United States, Algeria and Azerbaijan, while others may resort to fuel switching or tapping into reserves to manage short-term shortages.
Despite the sharp price spike, analysts believe the situation may not reach the severity of the 2022 energy crisis, owing to improved storage levels, diversified supply chains and upcoming LNG capacity additions. However, they caution that prolonged conflict or further attacks on energy infrastructure could push prices even higher and trigger inflationary pressures globally.
The developments have also raised concerns about broader economic fallout, including the risk of inflation, market volatility and slower growth. With energy infrastructure increasingly becoming a target in the conflict, global markets are expected to remain on edge in the coming weeks.
