Marking a major milestone in global space exploration, four astronauts selected for NASA’s Artemis II mission have arrived at the Kennedy Space Center in Florida, setting the stage for humanity’s first crewed journey towards the Moon in over five decades.
The crew—commander Reid Wiseman, pilot Victor Glover, mission specialist Christina Koch, and Canadian astronaut Jeremy Hansen—landed at the launch site aboard training jets after departing from Houston. Their arrival signals the beginning of final pre-launch preparations for the much-anticipated mission, which is scheduled to lift off as early as April 1.
Artemis II will be the first human lunar mission since 1972, when the Apollo programme last sent astronauts to the Moon. The 10-day mission will see the crew travel aboard NASA’s Orion spacecraft, launched atop the Space Launch System (SLS) rocket, and perform a flyby around the Moon before returning to Earth.
Unlike future missions, Artemis II will not land on the lunar surface. Instead, it is designed to test critical systems required for deep-space travel, including life-support mechanisms and spacecraft performance in lunar orbit. The mission will follow a “free-return trajectory,” allowing the spacecraft to loop around the Moon and safely return to Earth without additional propulsion if required.
The astronauts have now entered the final phase of preparations, including quarantine protocols to ensure crew health ahead of launch. NASA officials and international partners welcomed the team upon arrival, highlighting the mission’s global significance and collaborative nature.
Artemis II is part of NASA’s broader Artemis programme, which aims to establish a sustainable human presence on the Moon and eventually pave the way for missions to Mars. The mission follows the success of Artemis I, an uncrewed test flight conducted in 2022, and is expected to lay the groundwork for future lunar landings later this decade.
With final countdown preparations underway, anticipation is building worldwide as humanity prepares to return to deep space—this time with ambitions that extend far beyond the Moon.
