Despite experiencing its warmest summer on record in 2025, the United Kingdom recorded significantly fewer heat-related deaths than anticipated, according to data released by the UK Health Security Agency. Officials reported approximately 1,504 heat-associated deaths in England during the summer months—nearly half of the 3,039 fatalities that had been projected.
The figures come in a year marked by persistent heat and unusual weather patterns. According to the Met Office, summer 2025 was characterised by four separate heatwaves, though none individually broke temperature records. The highest temperature recorded during the season reached 35.8°C in Faversham, Kent, on July 1. This was marginally below the 35.9°C recorded in 1976 and well short of the UK’s all-time high of 40.3°C registered in July 2022.
However, what made 2025 exceptional was not peak temperatures but sustained warmth. The average temperature for the season stood at 16.1°C, surpassing the previous record of 15.76°C set in 2018. The prolonged warm conditions were attributed to a combination of meteorological factors, including dominant high-pressure systems, unusually warm surrounding seas, and dry soil conditions following a parched spring.
Experts believe that proactive measures may have played a crucial role in limiting the death toll. The UKHSA noted that heat health alerts, along with coordinated responses across the National Health Service and social care systems, likely mitigated the impact of extreme temperatures. There is also evidence to suggest that warmer conditions earlier in late spring may have prompted people to adopt protective behaviours—such as staying hydrated and avoiding peak sun exposure—well before the height of summer.
Dr. Agostinho Sousa, head of extreme events and health protection at UKHSA, said the lower-than-expected mortality figures indicate that preparedness and response strategies are beginning to make a difference. However, he cautioned against complacency, warning that heatwaves are expected to grow more intense, longer in duration, and more frequent in the coming years due to climate change. He stressed the importance of sustained vigilance and coordinated planning to safeguard vulnerable populations.
As in previous years, older individuals were the most affected by heat-related conditions. People aged 75 and above recorded the highest mortality rates, reflecting their increased susceptibility to extreme temperatures. Health experts note that ageing and pre-existing conditions such as cardiovascular disease can impair the body’s ability to regulate heat, increasing the risk of heat exhaustion and heatstroke.
While anyone can be affected by high temperatures, infants, the elderly, and those with chronic illnesses remain particularly at risk. Authorities continue to emphasise the importance of public awareness and timely intervention during heatwaves.
Looking ahead, early projections suggest that global temperatures in 2026 are likely to remain high. The Met Office has indicated that the global average temperature could exceed 1.46°C above pre-industrial levels, placing the year among the warmest on record. Although specific forecasts for the UK summer are not yet available, recent trends—including a relatively mild winter—suggest that above-average temperatures may persist.
Officials have reiterated that while progress has been made in reducing heat-related fatalities, the growing threat posed by climate change necessitates continued preparedness, public awareness, and robust health system responses to extreme weather events.
