World football’s governing body FIFA has sparked outrage among fans and politicians after sharply increasing the price of premium tickets for the 2026 FIFA World Cup final, with top-category seats now costing as much as $32,970 for the title clash scheduled at MetLife Stadium in New Jersey on July 19.
The latest round of ticket releases showed that FIFA had tripled the cost of its highest-tier “Front Category 1” seats from the earlier listed price of $10,990. The dramatic rise has intensified criticism over the growing commercialization of football and concerns that ordinary supporters are being priced out of the sport’s biggest event.
The 2026 FIFA World Cup, which will be jointly hosted by the United States, Canada and Mexico, is already being viewed as the most expensive edition of the tournament for spectators. Reports indicate that even lower-category tickets for the final are being sold at several thousand dollars, while resale prices on FIFA’s official exchange platform have climbed into the millions.
According to reports, resale tickets for the final have appeared online for prices ranging from around $8,000 to as high as $11.5 million, despite some of the seats reportedly offering limited views and no special hospitality benefits. FIFA has defended the pricing strategy, arguing that the demand-driven market in North America justifies higher ticket costs.
FIFA president Gianni Infantino recently stated that the soaring resale values demonstrate the enormous global demand for the tournament. He argued that the organization was adapting to the realities of the United States ticketing market, where ticket resales are largely unrestricted.
The governing body has also come under scrutiny because it earns commissions on resale transactions conducted through its official platform. Reports said FIFA charges a 15% fee from both buyers and sellers on resale deals, potentially allowing the organization to earn hundreds of thousands of dollars from high-value transactions.
The price escalation has drawn criticism from football supporters’ groups and lawmakers in the United States. Fan organizations have labelled the pricing structure “extortionate” and accused FIFA of abandoning the sport’s working-class fan base. Some American politicians have reportedly written to FIFA seeking explanations about the use of dynamic pricing and concerns over affordability.
Critics have also pointed out the huge jump from previous tournaments. The most expensive ticket for the 2022 World Cup final in Qatar cost approximately $1,600, making the current prices several times higher. Analysts say the increases reflect FIFA’s adoption of aggressive dynamic pricing systems commonly used in concerts and entertainment events.
The controversy surrounding ticket prices comes as FIFA continues preparations for the expanded 48-team tournament, which is expected to be the largest and most commercially lucrative World Cup in history. Despite the criticism, demand for tickets remains extremely strong, with millions of fans worldwide expected to compete for limited seats across the tournament’s 104 matches.
