Japanese automobile giant Toyota Motor Corporation has warned that the ongoing conflict involving Iran is severely impacting its financial performance, with the company estimating losses worth nearly £3 billion due to soaring raw material costs, supply disruptions and weakening sales in several regions. The development reflects the growing economic fallout of the conflict on global industries, particularly manufacturing and automobile sectors that rely heavily on international trade routes and stable commodity prices.
Toyota stated that rising prices of essential materials used in vehicle manufacturing, including steel, plastics and other industrial inputs, have sharply increased production costs over the past year. The company revealed that material costs alone surged by nearly 400 billion yen, while declining sales contributed additional losses estimated at around 270 billion yen. The automaker said the conflict in the Middle East, especially disruptions linked to the Strait of Hormuz, has created major uncertainty in shipping and fuel markets, significantly affecting supply chains across Asia and beyond.
The world’s largest carmaker by sales also pointed to the impact of higher transportation expenses and energy prices, which have risen globally amid fears over oil supply disruptions. Analysts believe the closure and instability around key maritime routes in the Gulf region have triggered sharp increases in fuel costs, affecting both manufacturing operations and consumer demand worldwide.
Toyota forecast that its operating profit for the current financial year could fall by more than 25%, dropping to nearly 3 trillion yen. The company further projected an additional hit of approximately 670 billion yen in the next fiscal year if current geopolitical tensions and economic conditions continue. The forecast was lower than expectations of several market analysts and led to concerns among investors regarding the long-term impact of the crisis on the global automobile industry.
Despite the difficult conditions, Toyota reported that global vehicle sales still rose modestly by around 2% during the previous financial year, reaching nearly 9.6 million units. Sales growth in North America reportedly helped offset declines in some other regions. Hybrid vehicles remained a major strength for the company, with demand for fuel-efficient models increasing amid high petrol prices triggered by the war. Toyota has continued to focus strongly on hybrid technology rather than shifting aggressively toward fully electric vehicles, a strategy that appears to be helping sustain demand in uncertain economic conditions.
The company also highlighted the burden of tariffs and global trade tensions, including measures imposed by the United States, which added further pressure on profitability. Industry experts said automakers are now facing a combination of rising commodity prices, disrupted shipping routes, expensive energy supplies and cautious consumer spending, creating one of the toughest environments for the sector in recent years.
Economic observers warn that the Iran conflict is no longer limited to geopolitical or military implications, as its effects are increasingly being felt across global markets. Rising oil prices and inflation fears have already weakened consumer confidence in several countries, while industries dependent on imported raw materials continue to face mounting costs.
