Japanese automobile giant Honda has reported its first annual loss in seven decades, marking a significant turning point for one of the world’s most established carmakers, as its heavy bet on electric vehicles (EVs) failed to deliver expected returns. For the financial year ending March 2026, the company posted an operating loss of ¥423 billion (approximately $2.68 billion), reflecting weaker-than-anticipated demand for EVs and rising external pressures that have disrupted its long-term transition strategy.
Honda acknowledged that the global EV market has not expanded at the pace it had forecast. Slower consumer uptake, intensifying competition, and rapidly changing policy environments—particularly in key markets like the United States—have combined to undermine profitability. The company also revealed that it would scale back certain EV production targets and shift part of its supply chain to China in order to reduce manufacturing costs, citing significantly cheaper components available in the region.
A major factor behind the financial setback has been policy changes in the United States. The removal of federal tax incentives for EV buyers, previously offering up to $7,500 in credits, has reduced consumer demand. The incentive was eliminated in September 2025 under US President Donald Trump’s administration. In addition, tariffs imposed on imported automobiles and auto parts in 2025 further squeezed margins across the industry, even after being slightly reduced from 25% to 15%. These combined policy shifts have weighed heavily on global automakers, including Honda, which relies significantly on the US market.
Honda, listed on the stock market since 1957 and currently Japan’s second-largest car manufacturer, now faces the challenge of adapting a large, legacy automotive structure to a rapidly shifting market landscape. Analysts note that its scale, while historically an advantage, has made it slower to pivot in response to sudden changes in EV demand and pricing dynamics.
In response to the setback, the company has announced a strategic recalibration. It will now place greater emphasis on its motorcycle division, financial services operations, and hybrid vehicle lineup, which continue to perform more consistently than its fully electric segment. Honda also identified North America, Japan, and India as priority growth markets, though it has paused its plans to establish EV and battery manufacturing operations in Canada.
Chief executive Toshihiro Mibe confirmed that the company is abandoning its previous ambition for EVs to account for 20% of global sales by 2030. He also stated that Honda will no longer pursue its earlier goal of transitioning entirely to electric vehicles by 2040. Looking ahead, the company expects further EV-related losses of around ¥512 billion in the next financial year ending March 2027, signaling continued turbulence in its electrification strategy.
Market analysts have described the development as a “bleak milestone” for Honda, though not entirely unexpected. Experts suggest that legacy automakers across the industry have struggled with overestimating the speed of the EV transition while underestimating the impact of affordability concerns, geopolitical policy shifts, and rising competition from Chinese manufacturers. Despite a recent uptick in EV demand driven by higher fuel prices linked to global geopolitical tensions, analysts warn that the sector remains highly volatile, forcing companies like Honda to constantly adjust strategies in an uncertain global automotive landscape.
