The world’s mangrove forests, long considered one of nature’s most effective shields against storms and climate change, are showing a significant recovery after decades of destruction, according to a new scientific study. Researchers have found that since 2010, the global area covered by mangroves has been increasing, reversing years of heavy losses caused by urbanisation, aquaculture and deforestation.
Mangroves, which grow along tropical and subtropical coastlines, are known for their dense root systems that help protect coastal communities from cyclones, storm surges and tsunamis. These forests also play a crucial role in fighting climate change, as they can absorb and store up to five times more carbon dioxide than forests on land.
For decades, however, mangrove ecosystems across Asia, Africa and the Americas were shrinking rapidly due to human activity. Large stretches of forests were cleared to make way for fish farms, agricultural land and expanding coastal settlements. Between the 1980s and 2010, more than 12,000 square kilometres of mangrove cover — roughly equivalent to the size of Jamaica — disappeared worldwide.
The latest study now points to a dramatic turnaround. Scientists found that the overall net loss of mangroves since the 1980s has been reduced to around 849 square kilometres, indicating a substantial recovery in recent years. Researchers attribute this shift to stronger environmental protection laws, restoration efforts and a growing public understanding of the importance of mangroves in safeguarding lives and ecosystems.
Lead author Dr Zhen Zhang from Tulane University in the United States said natural regeneration has been one of the most important factors behind the recovery. According to the researchers, once human interference such as tree cutting stops, mangroves have a remarkable ability to regrow on their own.
The study highlighted Indonesia and Myanmar among the countries where mangrove cover has stabilised or increased significantly. In Indonesia, public awareness about the protective value of mangroves reportedly rose after the devastating Indian Ocean tsunami in 2004. Scientists observed that islands protected by mangrove forests suffered comparatively less damage during the disaster, leading to greater efforts to conserve these ecosystems.
A similar trend was seen in Myanmar following Cyclone Nargis in 2008 and the introduction of a nationwide logging ban in 2016. Researchers noted that reduced deforestation in these countries allowed mangrove forests to naturally expand over time.
The study also credited advances in satellite technology for providing a clearer and more accurate picture of global mangrove cover. Scientists used Landsat satellite imagery, which can detect subtle canopy changes and identify newly grown forests that earlier assessments may have overlooked.
Experts involved in the study cautioned, however, that some of the apparent growth in mangrove forests may be linked to environmental degradation elsewhere. In countries such as Brazil, nutrient-rich sediments flowing from upstream areas affected by mining and deforestation may have contributed to mangrove expansion along rivers and coastlines.
Despite the encouraging findings, researchers warned that serious threats to mangroves remain. West and Central Africa continue to witness significant destruction, particularly in the Niger Delta region, where oil pollution has severely damaged coastal ecosystems. Scientists pointed out that oil pipelines cutting through mangrove forests have caused long-term environmental harm.
Extreme weather events also remain a major concern. Tropical cyclones were responsible for some of the largest single-year mangrove losses recorded in the study, affecting regions from Australia to the Caribbean.
Still, researchers described the overall findings as a rare environmental success story. The study also revealed that many surviving mangrove forests are becoming healthier and denser. Since the 1980s, the proportion of closed-canopy mangroves — considered the most carbon-rich and ecologically valuable — has increased by nearly 20%.
Scientists say the recovery demonstrates that conservation efforts, combined with reduced deforestation and public awareness, can help restore fragile ecosystems and strengthen global climate resilience.
