China’s export sector showed remarkable resilience in May, recording a sharp rise in overseas shipments despite mounting geopolitical uncertainty and economic pressures arising from the ongoing conflict in the Middle East. Official data released by Chinese customs authorities showed that exports from the world’s second-largest economy surged by 19.4% year-on-year during the month, significantly exceeding market expectations and providing a much-needed boost to Beijing’s growth ambitions.
The strong performance was largely fuelled by rising global demand for technology products, particularly semiconductors, artificial intelligence-related equipment and machinery, as well as automobiles. The export growth was considerably faster than April’s 14.1% increase and surpassed economists’ forecasts of around 15%, indicating that Chinese manufacturers continue to maintain a competitive edge in global markets despite a challenging international environment.
Chinese imports also registered a substantial increase, rising 27.4% compared with the same period last year. The stronger import figures are likely to be welcomed by policymakers in Beijing, who have repeatedly stressed the need to stimulate domestic consumption and reduce the economy’s dependence on exports and manufacturing-led growth. The rise in imports also suggests improving demand for industrial inputs and consumer goods within the country.
A notable feature of the latest trade data was the significant growth in exports to the United States. Shipments to the US climbed by more than 35% from a year earlier, reaching approximately $39 billion. Analysts attributed part of this rise to a favourable comparison base following trade disruptions and tariff-related tensions that affected bilateral trade last year. The increase also came amid renewed diplomatic engagement between Washington and Beijing, with trade remaining a key issue in discussions between the two countries.
Economists said the robust export performance reflects the competitiveness of Chinese manufacturers and their ability to capitalise on growing demand for advanced technology products. Exports of integrated circuits, automated data-processing equipment, electric vehicles and other high-tech products have emerged as major growth drivers. Demand linked to the global artificial intelligence boom has particularly benefited Chinese producers of chips and technology components.
Despite the encouraging figures, concerns remain about the sustainability of the export-led expansion. Rising energy prices triggered by the Middle East conflict, higher transportation costs and persistent shipping disruptions continue to pose risks to global trade. Chinese factories are also facing increased input costs, especially in the energy and chemical sectors. Recent manufacturing data has shown signs of slowing momentum, suggesting that external challenges could weigh on growth in the coming months.
China’s trade surplus widened to more than $105 billion in May, up from around $85 billion in April, reigniting concerns among major economies over the growing influx of Chinese goods into international markets. Policymakers in Europe and other regions have increasingly voiced worries about industrial overcapacity and what some analysts describe as a potential “China Shock 2.0”, driven by a surge in exports of electric vehicles, batteries, solar equipment and other manufactured products.
While challenges persist, the latest trade figures underscore China’s ability to leverage its vast manufacturing base and technological capabilities to sustain export growth, even as geopolitical tensions and global economic uncertainties continue to test international markets.
