United States President Donald Trump is reportedly considering an unprecedented proposal to acquire the strategically important Chagos Islands in the Indian Ocean, a move that has sparked fresh debate over global security, colonial-era disputes and the future of one of the world’s most significant military bases.
According to multiple international media reports, officials within the Trump administration are examining options that could allow the United States to purchase the Chagos Archipelago from Mauritius if sovereignty over the islands is formally transferred from the United Kingdom. The proposal centres on securing long-term control of Diego Garcia, the largest island in the archipelago and home to a crucial joint US-UK military facility.
The development comes amid an ongoing dispute over the future of the Chagos Islands.
