Barcelona’s iconic Sagrada Família, the unfinished masterpiece of renowned Catalan architect Antoni Gaudí, has reached a historic milestone nearly a century after its creator’s death. The completion of the church’s central Tower of Jesus Christ, rising to 172.5 metres (566 feet), has officially made the basilica the tallest church in the world, marking a remarkable chapter in one of the longest-running construction projects in architectural history.
Gaudí, often referred to as “God’s architect” for his deep religious devotion and visionary designs, died in June 1926 after being struck by a tram while walking to church in Barcelona. Mistaken for a pauper due to his modest appearance, he was taken to a charity hospital where he succumbed to his injuries a few days later. At the time of his death, Sagrada Família was still far from completion, leaving future generations with the challenge of carrying forward his ambitious vision.
The task became even more daunting when much of Gaudí’s original sketches, drawings and models were destroyed during the Spanish Civil War in 1936. For decades, architects and engineers struggled to interpret and recreate his plans. Questions were raised over whether the soaring towers envisioned by Gaudí could safely withstand wind pressures and whether the existing foundations were capable of supporting such immense structures.
Despite these setbacks, the basilica has continued to rise over Barcelona’s skyline, becoming one of the world’s most recognisable architectural landmarks. As preparations are made to commemorate the 100th anniversary of Gaudí’s death, the inauguration of the Tower of Jesus Christ stands as a tribute to his enduring legacy.
Central to Gaudí’s design philosophy was his fascination with the catenary arch, a structural form inspired by the natural curve created when a chain hangs freely between two points. When inverted, this curve forms an exceptionally stable arch capable of supporting great weight. Historians believe Gaudí drew inspiration from ancient structures, including the Arch of Taq-i Kisra in present-day Iraq, one of the largest and oldest surviving brick arches in the world.
Gaudí viewed the catenary arch as a superior alternative to the flying buttresses commonly used in neo-Gothic churches. He famously rejected such supports, describing them as unnecessary “crutches” for buildings unable to stand on their own. Instead, he designed Sagrada Família using self-supporting forms that efficiently distributed structural loads.
The architect’s commitment to combining mathematics, engineering and spirituality is visible throughout the basilica. The church’s interior features branching columns resembling trees, which support the roof and towers above while creating the impression of a stone forest. These columns, inspired by natural forms, allow the structure to bear enormous loads while maintaining an airy and elegant appearance.
Modern engineers have played a crucial role in turning Gaudí’s vision into reality. Using advanced construction technologies and sophisticated structural analysis, they have refined and completed designs that once seemed impossible. The result is a building that seamlessly blends ancient architectural principles with contemporary engineering expertise.
Today, Sagrada Família stands not only as a symbol of Barcelona but also as a testament to human creativity, perseverance and faith.
