Washington, D.C., briefly became the world’s most polluted major city after an unprecedented Fourth of July fireworks display organised as part of the Trump administration’s “Freedom 250” celebrations, according to air-quality monitoring data. The sharp spike in pollution triggered health alerts across the U.S. capital and surrounding areas before heavy rain helped clear the smoke later in the day.
The fireworks show, held to mark America’s Independence Day and the lead-up to the 250th anniversary of U.S. independence, featured an attempt to break a world record by launching around 850,000 fireworks within a 40-minute period. Pyrotecnico, the company contracted for the event, had planned one of the largest pyrotechnic displays ever staged in the United States.
Air-quality monitors began detecting elevated pollution levels during the evening of July 4 as local fireworks displays took place across the city. However, pollution levels rose dramatically during the main midnight spectacle, with dense smoke drifting across large sections of Washington. Fine particulate matter, known as PM2.5, reached levels far above the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency’s recommended 24-hour exposure standard. City monitoring data reviewed by international media showed concentrations exceeding 200 micrograms per cubic metre at some locations.
According to data compiled by Swiss air-quality company IQAir, Washington ranked as the most polluted major city in the world for several hours between roughly 3 a.m. and 5 a.m. on July 5. During that period, it temporarily surpassed cities that frequently record severe pollution episodes, including Jakarta, Kinshasa and Addis Ababa.
The deteriorating air quality prompted authorities to issue “Code Red” and “Code Purple” alerts across Washington, Maryland and Virginia. Health officials warned that the conditions were unhealthy for all residents and particularly dangerous for children, older adults and people with respiratory or cardiovascular illnesses. Experts advised limiting outdoor exposure, staying indoors where possible and using protective masks if necessary.
Despite the health concerns, the Environmental Protection Agency defended the celebrations. EPA spokesperson Brigit Hirsch told AFP that “fireworks are awesome” and expressed hope that Americans enjoyed the displays commemorating the nation’s upcoming 250th anniversary. The Trump administration has faced criticism from environmental groups over a broader agenda that includes rolling back several pollution-control measures.
Scientists said Washington was fortunate that thunderstorms and heavy rainfall arrived later on July 5, helping disperse the smoke more quickly than expected. By around midday, air-quality conditions had largely returned to normal levels, preventing what could have become a more prolonged pollution event.
