Bangladesh may be headed for another major political development as President Mohammed Shahabuddin is reportedly considering stepping down from office nearly two years before the completion of his five-year term, according to political sources. While there has been no official confirmation from the President’s Office, reports suggest that discussions over his possible resignation have intensified amid growing discomfort within the country’s political establishment regarding his continuation in the largely ceremonial post.
Sources familiar with the developments indicated that the issue has gained momentum in recent days, with senior political figures holding consultations over the future of the presidency. Although the exact timing of any announcement remains unclear, officials believe that a decision could be taken soon if the ongoing deliberations reach a conclusion. Mohammed Shahabuddin assumed office as the President of Bangladesh in April 2023 after being nominated by the then-ruling Awami League led by former Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina.
