Two decades after its public launch, Twitter’s journey from a simple text-based messaging platform to one of the world’s most influential social media networks stands as one of the defining stories of the internet era. Originally conceived as a modest experiment in short-form communication, the platform has transformed into X under billionaire Elon Musk’s ownership, reflecting dramatic shifts in technology, business strategy and the way people consume information.
Twitter, initially known as “twttr”, was publicly launched on July 15, 2006, after being developed by co-founders Jack Dorsey, Biz Stone, Evan Williams and Noah Glass. Inspired by the simplicity of SMS messaging, the service allowed users to post brief status updates that could be instantly shared with others. Jack Dorsey’s first message, “just setting up my twttr,” has since become one of the most iconic posts in internet history. Although the concept appeared basic at the time, it laid the foundation for a communication platform that would eventually influence politics, journalism, entertainment and public discourse worldwide.
The platform’s popularity surged during the 2007 South by Southwest (SXSW) conference in the United States, where attendees embraced its ability to share real-time updates. Around the same period, Twitter’s user-driven innovations helped redefine online conversations. The hashtag, first proposed in 2007, enabled users to organise discussions around specific topics, while the introduction of the retweet feature made it easier for information to spread rapidly across the platform. These features eventually became standard elements across multiple social media networks.
Twitter gradually established itself as the internet’s real-time newswire. One of its earliest demonstrations of this role came in 2009, when a passenger aboard US Airways Flight 1549 posted a photograph after the aircraft safely landed on New York’s Hudson River. The image spread globally within minutes, highlighting the platform’s ability to deliver breaking news faster than traditional media. Two years later, during the Arab Spring protests, Twitter emerged as a vital communication tool for demonstrators seeking to organise protests and share developments while bypassing conventional state-controlled media channels.
The company also underwent several leadership changes during its evolution. Evan Williams replaced Jack Dorsey as Chief Executive Officer in 2008, followed by Dick Costolo in 2010. Dorsey later returned to lead the company in 2015 as Twitter attempted to reinvigorate user growth and product innovation. During this period, the platform introduced an algorithm-driven timeline alongside the traditional chronological feed and expanded its character limit from 140 to 280 characters in 2017, allowing users greater flexibility in expressing their views.
Twitter’s influence also extended beyond text. In 2012, the company acquired Vine, a short-video application that popularised six-second looping videos and helped shape today’s booming short-form video culture. Although Vine was discontinued in 2017, many industry observers credit it with inspiring the format later adopted by platforms such as TikTok, Instagram Reels and YouTube Shorts.
A defining chapter in the company’s history began in 2022 when Elon Musk acquired Twitter for approximately $44 billion. Following the takeover, sweeping changes were introduced, including a paid verification system, revised content moderation policies and a broader vision of transforming the platform into an “everything app.” In 2023, Musk officially rebranded Twitter as X, replacing one of the internet’s most recognisable logos with a new identity. The transformation continued in 2025 when Musk’s artificial intelligence company, xAI, acquired X in a deal valuing the social media platform at about $33 billion, marking another significant step in integrating AI with social networking.
Despite debates over misinformation, moderation policies and the platform’s changing direction, X remains one of the world’s most influential digital platforms.
