More than half of England has officially been declared to be in drought following an extended spell of exceptionally hot and dry weather that has pushed water resources under severe strain and heightened concerns over agriculture, wildlife and public water supplies. According to the UK government’s Environment Agency, over half of England is now experiencing official drought conditions after weeks of record-low rainfall combined with unusually high temperatures. Meteorological data indicates that England has received only a fraction of its usual rainfall during July. Nationwide precipitation has been estimated at just around seven per cent of the monthly average, while some southern regions have recorded as little as one per cent of their expected rainfall. Combined with repeated heatwaves during the summer, the dry spell has accelerated evaporation from soil, reservoirs and rivers, worsening already fragile water supplies.
Environmental authorities have warned that the drought poses a serious threat to farming, ecosystems and biodiversity. Reservoir storage across England has also declined steadily and now remains well below seasonal averages. Government figures show reservoir levels have dropped significantly compared to long-term norms, while river flows across much of the country are classified as below normal or exceptionally low. Experts say continued dry weather without sustained rainfall could further intensify water shortages during late summer.
The Environment Agency has described the current situation as another reminder of the growing impact of climate change on the United Kingdom. Scientists note that rising global temperatures are increasing the frequency and intensity of heatwaves, leading to faster drying of soils and greater pressure on water resources. Although weather forecasts suggest some parts of the country may receive scattered showers in the coming days, experts caution that brief rainfall is unlikely to reverse the drought. They stress that only prolonged and widespread rainfall over an extended period will be sufficient to replenish depleted reservoirs, restore river flows and ease pressure on agriculture and the environment. Until then, England is expected to remain under heightened drought monitoring as authorities continue efforts to manage one of the country’s most severe dry spells in recent years.
