The United States passport has recorded its weakest performance in more than a decade, slipping further down the global rankings as several countries strengthened their international travel access through expanded visa-free agreements. According to the latest Henley Passport Index, the US now trails more than 30 countries in terms of passport strength, reflecting a gradual decline in its global mobility standing over the years.
The Henley Passport Index, which evaluates passports based on the number of destinations their holders can enter without obtaining a visa in advance, is regarded as one of the world’s most widely referenced measures of travel freedom. The rankings are compiled using data from the International Air Transport Association (IATA) and assess access to 227 travel destinations across the globe.
In the latest rankings, Singapore retained its position as the world’s most powerful passport, offering its citizens visa-free or visa-on-arrival access to the highest number of destinations worldwide. Japan, South Korea and several European nations also occupied the top positions, continuing the dominance of Asian and European countries in global travel mobility. Meanwhile, the United States has continued a downward trajectory that began several years ago. Although the US remains among the world’s stronger passports, it now occupies its lowest ranking in over ten years, with more than 30 countries effectively positioned ahead of it because of multiple tied rankings.
Experts believe the shift reflects changing diplomatic priorities rather than simply travel convenience. Countries that have actively pursued reciprocal visa waiver agreements and strengthened bilateral ties have steadily improved their passport rankings. The report suggests that nations investing in international cooperation and openness have benefited from greater global mobility for their citizens.
Analysts also point to evolving immigration policies in the United States as a contributing factor. Over recent years, stricter visa procedures, increased scrutiny for foreign travellers and additional travel-related requirements have been cited as factors that may influence reciprocal arrangements with other countries. While these domestic measures are designed to address national security and immigration concerns, they can indirectly affect the ease with which American citizens travel abroad.
The Henley Passport Index has highlighted that the gap between the world’s strongest and weakest passports remains substantial. Citizens of countries at the top of the rankings enjoy access to well over 190 destinations without requiring a prior visa, whereas holders of the lowest-ranked passports can travel visa-free to only a small fraction of those destinations. This disparity underscores the continuing importance of diplomatic relations and international agreements in determining global mobility.
The latest rankings also reveal the growing influence of Asian countries in shaping international travel. Singapore has consistently maintained its leadership by expanding visa-free access through strong diplomatic engagement. Other countries in Asia and the Middle East, including the United Arab Emirates, have made remarkable gains over the past decade by negotiating broader travel agreements and strengthening international partnerships.
While the United States remains one of the world’s most influential nations economically and politically, the latest passport rankings illustrate that global mobility increasingly depends on reciprocal visa arrangements and sustained diplomatic outreach. The Henley Passport Index suggests that passport strength is no longer determined solely by economic power, but also by a country’s ability to foster international cooperation and maintain open travel policies.
