Singapore Prime Minister Lawrence Wong is set to receive a substantial increase in his annual remuneration, with his salary expected to rise by about 64% to S$3.6 million, or roughly US$2.8 million a year. The revision will further cement Singapore’s position as the country with the world’s highest-paid prime minister, with Wong’s compensation far exceeding that of political leaders in major economies such as the United States and the United Kingdom.
The revised salary framework is scheduled to take effect from October 15, 2026, following a review of political salaries in Singapore. Wong’s annual pay currently stands at around S$2.2 million, and the new benchmark will take it to S$3.6 million, equivalent to approximately ₹27 crore depending on exchange rates. The increase is part of a wider revision of remuneration for Singapore’s political officeholders and Members of Parliament.
Wong announced the changes in Parliament while responding to recommendations made by an independent committee that reviewed Singapore’s political salary framework. The government has accepted the recommendations, arguing that the salary structure needs to remain competitive enough to attract capable people into politics and public service.
Singapore has long followed a distinctive approach to political remuneration. Rather than keeping ministers’ salaries comparatively low, the country benchmarks political pay against the earnings of its highest-paid citizens. The system is intended to ensure that talented professionals from the private sector and other fields are not discouraged from entering public life because of the financial sacrifice involved. The government has also argued that competitive salaries can help maintain high standards of integrity and reduce incentives for corruption.
However, the announcement has also revived debate over the substantial gap between political salaries and the earnings of ordinary Singaporeans. Wong himself acknowledged that political salaries are a sensitive and emotional issue because the amounts involved are considerably higher than what most citizens earn. Singapore’s median monthly wage was around S$5,775 in 2025, highlighting the significant difference between the income of ordinary workers and the country’s political leadership.
Wong said that he understood why Singaporeans scrutinise the issue closely but argued that the discussion should not be viewed merely as a question of how much ministers are paid. According to him, the broader concern is whether Singapore will continue to have the quality of political leadership required to manage the country and address difficult challenges.
The salary revision comes after a prolonged period during which political pay in Singapore remained largely unchanged. The country’s ministers last underwent a major salary adjustment in 2012, when their remuneration was reduced by about 36% following public dissatisfaction over high political salaries. A subsequent review in 2017 recommended an upward adjustment, but the government decided not to implement it. Another review scheduled for 2023 was postponed amid economic uncertainty. As a result, the salary framework remained unchanged for around 15 years.
Under the revised system, ministers will not immediately receive the full new benchmark salaries. Instead, political officeholders will receive a one-time adjustment of up to 9%, with the actual increase depending on factors such as individual performance and the timing of their previous salary adjustments. Further changes will be linked to performance and responsibilities rather than automatically bringing everyone up to the new benchmark.
For junior ministers, the benchmark annual salary is being raised from S$1.1 million to S$1.8 million. However, the government has clarified that this figure will not become an automatic salary for every minister. By the end of the current government term, most ministers remaining at the relevant grade are expected to earn around S$1.35 million, while those with stronger performance or greater responsibilities could earn more.
Members of Parliament will also see their monthly allowances increase, from S$13,750 to S$18,500. The revised framework also provides greater flexibility to differentiate remuneration based on performance, seniority and responsibilities.
Wong has attempted to address concerns surrounding his own salary increase by announcing that he will donate the entire increase in his salary to charitable causes for the next five years. He said the decision was his own and that he did not expect other political officeholders to follow the same approach. The prime minister added that he would reassess the situation after five years rather than make the commitment open-ended.
The proposed salary increase places Wong significantly ahead of other major world leaders in terms of official annual compensation. The US president receives an annual salary of US$400,000, while the British prime minister earns around US$230,000. Even after accounting for differences in compensation structures, Singapore’s political leaders remain among the world’s highest-paid public officials.
The issue is expected to remain a subject of political and public debate in Singapore. Supporters of the system argue that attracting highly skilled individuals to government requires competitive remuneration, particularly when senior professionals can command considerably higher salaries in the private sector. Critics, meanwhile, have questioned whether the country’s high political salaries adequately reflect the financial realities faced by ordinary citizens.
The salary changes will be debated in Parliament, putting renewed focus on Singapore’s long-standing model of paying political leaders at levels linked to top private-sector earnings. For Wong, the challenge will be to convince the public that the increase is not simply a pay rise for politicians but part of a broader effort to maintain Singapore’s reputation for competent, clean and effective governance.
