Brazil has recorded its lowest annual deforestation level in the Amazon rainforest since satellite monitoring began in 1988, with forest clearance declining sharply over the past year. The latest figures highlight the impact of strengthened environmental protection measures under President Luiz Inácio Lula da Silva, while raising questions about whether the progress will continue after the country’s upcoming presidential election.
According to data released by Brazil’s National Institute for Space Research (INPE), around 3,335 square kilometres of the Amazon rainforest were cleared between August 2025 and July 2026. This represents a 41.8 per cent decline compared with the previous year and marks the lowest annual figure in the 38-year monitoring record. The area cleared was also 1,236 square kilometres smaller than the previous record low.
The results mark a significant change from the period under former president Jair Bolsonaro, whose 2019-2022 administration saw Amazon deforestation rise by approximately 59.5 per cent. Environmental protection agencies faced funding and enforcement challenges during that period, while illegal logging, mining and land clearance remained major concerns.
The latest figures come at a crucial time for Brazil, which is preparing for a presidential run-off on October 25. Lula is contesting the election against Senator Flávio Bolsonaro, the son of the former president. The candidates have sharply contrasting approaches to environmental protection, making the future of the Amazon a major issue in the country’s political debate.
The Amazon is one of the world’s most important ecological regions, supporting extraordinary biodiversity, Indigenous communities and natural systems that help regulate the global climate. Forest destruction releases stored carbon into the atmosphere and threatens ecosystems that influence rainfall and weather patterns well beyond South America.
Among the Brazilian states most affected by forest clearance, Pará accounted for 33.9 per cent of the total recorded in the Amazon during the latest reporting period. Mato Grosso contributed 25.5 per cent, while Amazonas accounted for 15.7 per cent. Despite remaining major hotspots, all three states reported reductions of more than 45 per cent compared with the previous year. Roraima was the only state where deforestation increased, recording a marginal rise of 0.4 per cent.
The improvement was not limited to the Amazon rainforest. The neighbouring Cerrado, a vast tropical savanna that has faced extensive land clearance for agricultural expansion, also registered a significant decline. Annual deforestation in the region fell to approximately 5,516 square kilometres, its lowest level since records began in 2001. Over the past four years, forest loss in the Cerrado has decreased by 48.4 per cent, according to the reported figures.
Environmental groups have attributed the improvement to stronger enforcement against illegal forest clearance and renewed government commitment to conservation. The measures have included restoring penalties for environmental violations detected through satellite monitoring and directing resources towards areas facing intense pressure from deforestation. Efforts to promote sustainable economic activities have also formed part of the broader strategy.
However, conservationists have warned that the gains remain vulnerable to political changes. The upcoming presidential run-off could determine whether the existing policies are continued, modified or reversed. While Lula has pledged to pursue zero net deforestation by 2030, Flávio Bolsonaro has proposed changes to environmental oversight and emphasised economic activities linked to natural resources.
Agriculture, livestock farming, mining and logging continue to exert pressure on forest ecosystems. Experts have also cautioned that deforestation figures alone do not capture the full extent of the Amazon’s environmental challenges. Forest degradation caused by wildfires, prolonged drought and selective logging can damage ecosystems even where large-scale tree clearance is not recorded.
The latest figures therefore represent an important milestone, but they do not mean the threat to the Amazon has ended. Maintaining the downward trend will require continued monitoring, effective enforcement and measures to balance economic development with forest conservation.
With the election approaching, Brazil faces a critical decision over the future direction of its environmental policy. The record decline demonstrates the progress achieved in reducing forest clearance, while the coming months will help determine whether that progress can be sustained.
