An increasing number of Indian technology professionals are choosing to return home from the United States amid growing uncertainty over immigration policies, employment opportunities and the future of work visas under the Donald Trump administration. The trend has gathered momentum in 2026, with nearly 12,700 Indian technology workers having moved back to India by September, raising the possibility that the annual return figure could surpass last year’s record.
According to data compiled by staffing firm Xpheno, the number of Indian technology professionals returning from the US has been rising steadily over the past few years. Around 7,200 professionals returned in 2023, followed by 9,800 in 2024. The figure reached approximately 15,100 in 2025, setting a new high. With 12,700 professionals already having returned in the first nine months of 2026, the annual numbers could exceed the previous year’s peak if the trend continues.
The changing migration pattern comes against the backdrop of tighter immigration measures under US President Donald Trump, concerns surrounding H-1B visa regulations and widespread uncertainty in the technology job market. Layoffs across major technology companies have further added to the concerns of Indian professionals working in the US, prompting some to reconsider their long-term plans and relocate to India.
The H-1B visa programme has traditionally served as an important route for skilled foreign professionals, particularly Indians, seeking employment in the American technology sector. However, concerns over changing immigration rules and delays in employment-based permanent residency applications have created anxiety among workers who depend on employer sponsorship to continue living and working in the country.
The uncertainty has also intensified following the suspension of PERM processing for several prominent technology companies, including Microsoft, Adobe, Infosys, Cognizant, Capgemini, Wipro, HCL Technologies and Tata. The Program Electronic Review Management (PERM) process is an important step in the employer-sponsored green card system, allowing eligible foreign employees to pursue permanent residency in the US.
Under the PERM procedure, employers are generally required to establish that suitable American workers are not readily available for the position and that hiring a foreign professional will not adversely affect the wages and working conditions of similarly employed US workers. The suspension of processing has raised concerns among Indian employees hoping to secure permanent residency through their employers, as pending applications and new filings could face delays.
However, immigration specialists have clarified that the suspension should not be confused with the cancellation of existing work visas or previously approved green cards. Immigration expert Swatilina Barik, speaking to American Bazaar, explained that the measure does not invalidate currently valid H-1B visas or revoke green cards that have already been approved. Instead, it restricts the affected companies from submitting fresh PERM applications and puts applications under consideration on hold during the suspension period. The impact on individual employees would depend on their existing immigration status and the stage of their green card applications.
Returning to India, however, does not necessarily guarantee an easy professional transition. Industry observers point out that Indian companies are increasingly seeking specialised expertise in areas such as artificial intelligence, cloud computing, cybersecurity and product leadership. Consequently, overseas experience alone may not be sufficient to secure senior positions or comparable compensation in the domestic market.
Professionals relocating with their families may also encounter additional challenges, including navigating tax obligations in both countries and helping their children adjust to India’s education system, lifestyle and social environment.
The growing reverse migration could gradually alter the traditional India-US technology employment corridor, which has for decades seen skilled Indian professionals move to America in search of better career opportunities. With immigration uncertainty, corporate restructuring and changing hiring priorities reshaping the employment landscape, India could increasingly emerge as a destination for professionals who previously considered the US their long-term workplace.
