A growing number of Americans are applying for Canadian citizenship, driven by a mix of political anxiety, policy changes, and newly expanded eligibility rules that have opened the door to millions with ancestral ties to Canada.
According to recent reports, the surge has been fuelled in part by developments in the United States following the return of President Donald Trump to the White House in 2025, with some Americans expressing concerns over political instability, economic uncertainty, and security issues.
A key factor behind the spike is a significant amendment to Canada’s Citizenship Act through Bill C-3, which has broadened access to citizenship by descent. Earlier restrictions that limited citizenship claims to the first generation born outside Canada were struck down as unconstitutional in 2023, allowing individuals to trace eligibility through parents, grandparents, or even earlier generations, provided documentation is available.
This legislative shift has effectively made millions of Americans eligible to apply, particularly those with historical Canadian roots. Immigration experts note that applicants must still prove an unbroken chain of citizenship, meaning eligibility can be denied if an ancestor renounced or lost their Canadian status at any point.
The impact of the policy change is already visible. An Ottawa-based immigration consultant reported that applications from Americans have increased nearly tenfold, rising from about 10 cases per month to around 100.
Similarly, demand for historical records required to prove lineage has surged. Quebec’s archives, for instance, saw requests from US residents jump from about 100 in February 2025 to nearly 1,500 in February 2026, reflecting a sharp rise in interest.
Experts point out that while interest in moving to Canada typically rises after US elections, such spikes have historically been short-lived. However, the current trend appears different, with a sustained increase in applications since late 2024. Immigration professionals describe the ongoing demand as unprecedented in recent decades.
For many applicants, the motivation goes beyond legal eligibility. Some Americans cite fears about economic decline and political instability, seeking Canadian citizenship as a safety net. Others point to concerns over US immigration policies and law enforcement practices, with some individuals expressing apprehension about being targeted based on ethnicity or perceived background.
Geopolitical developments have also contributed to these anxieties. Reports of US military actions abroad and the possibility of further interventions have heightened fears among certain sections of the population, prompting them to consider alternative residency options.
