The iconic British luxury carmaker Aston Martin Lagonda has unveiled plans to cut up to 20% of its global workforce as part of an aggressive cost-cutting strategy aimed at saving around £40 million amid deepening financial losses and challenging market conditions. The announcement, made on Wednesday, signals one of the most significant restructuring efforts in the company’s recent history and comes as Aston Martin contends with persistent losses and a difficult international trade environment.
The planned reduction will affect close to 600 jobs worldwide from a total workforce of approximately 3,000, with the majority of roles impacted based on current headcount distributions. This round of redundancies follows earlier cuts, including a 5% reduction announced at the start of 2025, and reflects a continued push by the company to streamline operations after successive profit warnings.
According to the company’s preliminary results for the fiscal year 2025, Aston Martin posted a substantial operating loss of £259.2 million, with pre-tax losses widening from the previous year’s £289.1 million to £363.9 million. The widening losses underscore the severity of the financial challenges the firm faces as it seeks to adapt to shifting global demand and increased operational costs.
Chief among the external pressures cited by Aston Martin are disrupted trade conditions due to U.S. import tariffs and “extremely subdued” demand in China, two factors that have significantly impacted its export performance and overall revenue growth. U.S. tariff measures imposed in recent years have raised the cost of exporting UK-built vehicles into a key market, while slower luxury car sales in China have compounded difficulties in one of the world’s largest auto markets.
In a statement to investors, the luxury marque’s leadership acknowledged the difficulty of the decision but stressed that the workforce reduction was necessary to align the company’s cost structure with its evolving strategic priorities. The firm also reported trimming its five-year capital expenditure plan by £300 million, scaling back investment from £2 billion to £1.7 billion in an effort to preserve cash flow and prioritise core areas of growth.
Despite the bleak figures, Aston Martin said it expects further cash outflows in 2026 but anticipates a “material improvement” in financial performance throughout the year, supported by its transformation initiatives and increased deliveries of new products such as its Valhalla hybrid supercar. The company has set targets for gross margins in the high-30% range and aims to bring adjusted earnings before interest and taxes close to breakeven.
Investors appeared to respond positively to the restructuring news, with Aston Martin’s shares rising nearly 5% in London trading following the announcement, reversing a nine-session slide. However, analysts warn that slashing the workforce so dramatically could hinder the company’s ability to ramp up production and reverse declining sales in the long term, particularly as it seeks to compete with other premium automotive brands in a highly competitive global market.
This latest cost-cutting move also follows a series of financial manoeuvres by the firm, including the recent sale of naming rights for its Formula One team for £50 million, another effort to bolster liquidity. As Aston Martin navigates these headwinds, it remains focused on structuring a more resilient business model capable of withstanding prolonged economic uncertainties and sustaining its storied brand legacy.
