In addition to thrilling the crowds and showcasing Military capability, the Australian International Airshow 2023 (AIA23) at Avalon has proven to be an important testing ground for 2 air navigation service providers in Australia.
The Royal Australian Air Force and Airservices Australia collaborated at AIA23 using the same air traffic control endorsements for the first time. Squadron Leader Ash Wright was the detachment commander for the 44 Wing’s air traffic control officers and communications electronic technicians, overseeing the military component.
Many international, military and private aircraft have flown in. Our accomplishments at Avalon are a good predictor of the actions we will take at Airservices. According to Squadron Leader Wright, they are essential to the effective development of Australian airspace and related air traffic services.
“In years past, our detachment would serve as a liaison for the air show. We have now been granted civilian control endorsements for the first time, enabling us to collaborate with our Airservices coworkers.
It’s crucial to remember that pilots on the other end of the radio won’t be able to tell the difference between a military and a civilian controller at Avalon.
“Now, when you ascend to Avalon Tower, you’ll notice a mixture of Air Force uniforms and non-military clothing. One-team tactics are now the standard, according to Squadron Leader Wright.
“Aligning our protocols is essential for significant events like AIA23. By their very nature, air shows are complicated affairs. We can serve all airfield users safely, effectively, and consistently because we can coordinate our practices with our civilian counterparts.
SQNLDR Wright claimed that while the team had to work very hard to manage the first group of Air Force air traffic controllers at Avalon, the payoff for a job well done made it worthwhile.
He said that we are fortunate to have an office with a fantastic view, and we take time to sit back and absorb everything this air show has to offer, despite the operational tempo.
“They have greatly pleased me.”
