The government of Australia has decided to extend the Magnitsky Act’s targeted financial sanctions and travel bans to a further 14 persons, in addition to placing targeted financial restrictions on 14 Iranian businesses that are responsible for serious abuses and violations of human rights in Iran.
Four officers of the Morality Police who were responsible for the arrest, incarceration, and ill-treatment of Mahsa ‘Jina’ Amini are among those who have been targeted with human rights sanctions in the style of those imposed in the Magnitsky case.
Targets of the sanctions include senior figures in law enforcement, politics, and the military, including members of the Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps. These individuals were involved in the violent crackdown on protests that followed Ms Amini’s death and the Iranian people’s ongoing oppression.
Additionally, Australia is joining forces with other nations to impose extra targeted financial sanctions as well as travel bans on thirteen Iranian individuals. Additionally, Australia is joining forces with other countries to impose further targeted economic sanctions on one entity that is involved in production and supply of drones to Russia.
Russia has been using drones built in Iran to target humans and civilian infrastructure in Ukraine. These drones have been made in Iran.
Including these individuals and organizations on the list illustrates that there will be repercussions for those who provide material support to Russia.
The people of Australia are in solidarity with the people of Iran and Ukraine.
