Australia’s endangered wildlife is facing an unprecedented conservation challenge, but the recovery of one of the country’s most unusual marsupials is offering a rare note of optimism. The numbat, a small, striped animal found in only a handful of locations in south-western Australia, has made a significant comeback after decades of decline and has recently been removed from the international list of threatened species.
The recovery is being closely monitored at Dryandra Woodland in Western Australia, one of the last strongholds of the species. Each spring, conservationists and volunteers spend about two weeks searching the woodland for numbats as the young animals begin emerging from their burrows. The painstaking exercise involves driving slowly along bush tracks, watching the forest floor and tree lines for any movement or flash of the animals’ distinctive stripes.
Researchers record every sighting, including GPS coordinates and the animal’s distance from roads. The information is then used to estimate numbat numbers and population density, providing an important measure of the species’ long-term health. The work is supported by the Numbat Taskforce, a volunteer organisation that assists conservation researchers with limited resources.
The task is far from easy. Numbats are small, elusive and remarkably well camouflaged, meaning that hours can pass without a single sighting. Conservationists may encounter parrots, wallabies, goannas and echidnas during their surveys while failing to spot the animal they are specifically looking for.
When conservationist Tony Friend began working at Dryandra in the 1980s, the local numbat population had fallen to fewer than 50 animals. The species had been pushed towards extinction by many of the same pressures that continue to threaten Australian wildlife today. Habitat destruction, agriculture, mining, timber operations, introduced predators and climate change have all contributed to the decline of native species.
Feral cats and foxes remain a major threat to numbats, which are also vulnerable because of their dependence on termite populations for food. Special devices installed in the woodland can detect and target feral predators with poison, forming part of an ongoing effort to protect the remaining population.
Australia’s broader biodiversity crisis is particularly serious because the country is home to an extraordinary range of species found nowhere else. More than 80 per cent of its plants and animals are believed to be endemic. Yet the country has suffered extensive wildlife losses, with experts warning that extinction rates are accelerating.
The threats are widespread. Native habitats continue to be cleared for urban development, agriculture, mining and forestry, while invasive species such as rabbits, foxes, feral cats, fire ants and cane toads damage ecosystems and prey on native wildlife. Invasive weeds also transform natural habitats, while diseases have devastated species including koalas and native frogs.
Climate change has added another layer of pressure. Rising temperatures can directly kill animals, destroy food sources and make traditional habitats unsuitable. Extreme heat events have caused large numbers of flying foxes to die, while increasingly severe floods, bushfires and other natural disasters are causing widespread damage.
The 2019-20 Black Summer bushfires alone were estimated to have killed or displaced billions of animals. Subsequent record-breaking floods created another major environmental crisis, although the full impact on wildlife remains difficult to calculate.
Conservationists are responding through breeding programmes, predator control and the establishment of protected populations. At Perth Zoo, for example, numbats are bred in captivity before being released into the wild. The programme is designed not only to increase numbers but also to strengthen genetic diversity in isolated populations.
Such efforts have produced encouraging results, but conservationists caution that breeding programmes cannot replace functioning natural ecosystems. Some threatened species remain unable to survive outside carefully managed reserves because of predators, habitat loss and other pressures. Fenced conservation areas also bring their own challenges, including genetic inbreeding and the need to manage population sizes.
The numbat’s recovery therefore represents both an achievement and a warning. Its return from the brink demonstrates what sustained conservation, scientific monitoring and community involvement can accomplish. At the same time, the continuing decline of many other Australian species highlights the need for stronger habitat protection, better control of invasive predators and greater action on climate change.
For the volunteers and scientists searching Dryandra Woodland each year, every numbat sighting is more than a data point. It is evidence that a species once reduced to dangerously low numbers can still recover when conservation efforts are sustained. Yet experts say that without stronger political commitment and adequate funding, Australia’s wider biodiversity crisis could continue to push many more unique species towards extinction.
