In March, the first ice cores from the Australian Antarctic Division’s (AAD) Million Year Ice Core project were safely returned to Tasmania by a Royal Australian Air Force (RAAF) C-17A Globemaster.
The ice cores could be moved from Casey Station back to AAD Headquarters in Hobart using specialized powered cold boxes thanks to RAAF’s excellent lift capability.
According to Mr Filipowski, “The AAD can leverage off the particular capabilities Defense has.”
“The AAD is grateful for the substantial support provided by the ADF. Since the launch of Operation Southern Discovery in 2017, there has been a continuing relationship.
The ADF also carried out an airdrop of roughly 12 tonnes of supplies to a remote field location halfway between Casey and Davis stations to prepare for a scientific effort next season.
Delivering cargo on the final ADF mission of the season was very satisfying for Flying Lieutenants Conor O’Neill and Alice McCabe, pilots of the C-17A Globemaster III.
Flying Lieutenant Conor O’Neill remarked, “It felt amazing to deliver the last cargo of food for the season.”
Flying Lieutenant Alice McCabe said the AAD team much appreciated the long-distance delivery.
“We offer ground security and logistical support. That facilitates 36 Squadron’s tasks and aids AAD in their work, according to Corporal Williams.
Operation Southern Discovery is a yearly event that mainly takes place from November to March.
