Bangkok has been grappling with one of its most severe flooding episodes in recent years after intense and prolonged rainfall inundated large parts of the Thai capital, leaving streets submerged, disrupting transport and forcing thousands of residents to seek shelter. Authorities have declared a flood disaster across all 50 districts of the city, while the government has reported around 40 deaths linked to the flooding, including cases involving drowning and accidental electrocution.
The scale of the flooding has overwhelmed several neighbourhoods that routinely experience waterlogging during Thailand’s rainy season. However, residents said the latest spell was markedly different from the short, heavy showers Bangkok commonly receives. In some parts of the capital, around 300mm of rain was recorded over approximately two days, creating large stretches of stagnant water and leaving roads, homes and vehicles partially or completely submerged.
The situation was particularly severe at the Khlong Chan housing complex in north-eastern Bangkok, where water rose around the lower levels of residential buildings. Residents described watching floodwaters steadily climb as the rain continued through the day and night. By the time some residents received warnings on their mobile phones, water on the surrounding streets had already reached waist height.
As the rain temporarily eased, some water began to recede, but residents were left dealing with another problem: the accumulation of rubbish, debris and stagnant water. The retreating floodwaters also brought an increasingly strong odour, adding to concerns among people who had already spent days navigating difficult conditions.
Bangkok’s geographical location has long made it vulnerable to flooding. The city sits on the floodplain of the Chao Phraya River and depends on an extensive system of drainage canals, pumps and flood barriers to move excess water away from populated areas. However, decades of construction and urban expansion have reduced parts of the traditional canal network, limiting the city’s ability to rapidly drain exceptionally large volumes of rainwater.
The latest flooding has produced unusual scenes across the capital. Residents have resorted to makeshift methods to move through inundated neighbourhoods, with inflatable pools being used in some places as improvised boats. In another striking example, a resident used a refrigerator as a floating platform. Traffic on major roads has also been badly affected, while schools have been forced to close in several areas.
The disruption has extended to Bangkok’s main international gateway, Suvarnabhumi airport. A significant number of Thai Airways employees were reportedly unable to reach their workplaces because of the flooding and transport disruption, contributing to a backlog of luggage and the cancellation of flights. The wider road network has also been affected, leaving commuters stranded and making it difficult for people in less severely flooded areas to travel.
Thai Prime Minister Anutin Charnvirakul said the metropolitan area remained vulnerable to additional flooding, particularly as water moved southwards from northern areas. Authorities established a monitoring centre to keep track of developments, while the country’s weather agency warned that further heavy rainfall could occur in the following week.
The flooding has also renewed concerns about Bangkok’s ability to cope with increasingly intense rainfall. Scientists studying weather patterns in Southeast Asia have pointed to indications of a rise in extreme rainfall events across parts of the region. Warmer atmospheric conditions can hold greater amounts of moisture, while warmer seas can increase evaporation, potentially providing more moisture for intense rainfall events.
Ocean scientist Nikolaos Skliris of the University of Southampton said observations already indicated a modest but significant increase in extreme rainfall in central Thailand. Climate models, he said, suggested that the trend could become more pronounced over time, with both the amount and intensity of rainfall increasing.
Scientists have, however, cautioned against directly attributing this particular flooding episode to climate change without a detailed scientific assessment. The immediate weather event was associated with a low-pressure system that moved from an unusually warm South China Sea across Cambodia and Vietnam before becoming concentrated over Bangkok. The presence of a strong El Niño event has further complicated the picture, with recent research indicating that although El Niño can generally bring drier summer conditions to Southeast Asia, it may also contribute to individual episodes of exceptionally heavy rainfall.
Experts have also raised questions about the city’s preparedness for prolonged rainfall. Naim Laeni, who co-authored research on Bangkok’s flood resilience, said the city’s drainage infrastructure was designed to cope with substantially lower hourly rainfall rates than some areas experienced during the recent spell. Bangkok’s drainage canals can handle about 60mm of rainfall an hour, with upgraded sections capable of managing around 80mm, but intense localised bursts exceeded those levels. The persistence of the rainfall also placed additional pressure on the system because there was little time for accumulated water to drain before another period of heavy rain arrived.
The effects of the weather system have not been confined to Thailand. Neighbouring Myanmar has also experienced flash floods, landslides and blocked roads, complicating rescue and relief operations. In southern Myanmar, rescuers recovered bodies after a landslide devastated a village, while several people remained missing following another landslide. Information from some affected areas has been difficult to obtain because of the country’s ongoing conflict and restrictions affecting media and humanitarian organisations.
In Bangkok, pumping stations have continued operating at full capacity as authorities work to remove the floodwaters. Officials have warned that some areas could take several more days to fully drain. Despite the disruption and damage, residents in affected communities have continued helping one another with food, movement and other essential support.
The latest flooding has highlighted the vulnerability of a rapidly expanding megacity built on low-lying land and dependent on an ageing and heavily pressured drainage network. While authorities work to clear the immediate floodwaters, the event has also renewed questions about how Bangkok can strengthen its infrastructure and emergency preparedness to deal with increasingly unpredictable and intense rainfall in the years ahead.
