The BBC is set to slash up to 2,000 jobs in the United Kingdom, marking its biggest workforce reduction in nearly 15 years as the public broadcaster grapples with mounting financial pressures and a rapidly changing media landscape.
According to multiple reports, the proposed layoffs could impact around 10% of the organisation’s approximately 21,500 employees in the UK. Senior staff were briefed about the move during internal meetings, with a formal announcement expected as part of a broader restructuring strategy aimed at cutting costs and streamlining operations.
The job cuts form part of a wider cost-reduction plan announced earlier this year, under which the broadcaster aims to save roughly £500–£600 million over the next few years. The move reflects growing concerns within the organisation about rising production costs, declining revenue from licence fees, and increased competition from global streaming platforms and digital media services.
Interim director-general Rhodri Talfan Davies has indicated that the cuts are necessary to address a widening gap between income and expenditure. In communications to staff, he acknowledged the uncertainty the decision would create but stressed the urgency of responding to financial challenges driven by inflation, shifting audience habits, and a turbulent global economy.
The restructuring comes at a crucial time for the BBC, just ahead of the appointment of former Google executive Matt Brittin as the new director-general. His leadership is expected to focus on transforming the organisation to adapt to digital consumption trends and ensuring long-term sustainability.
Outgoing director-general Tim Davie had earlier flagged the need to reduce around 10% of the broadcaster’s annual cost base, signalling that job reductions would be unavoidable. The cuts are also expected to coincide with decisions to scale back or discontinue certain programmes as part of broader efficiency measures.
The BBC, which is primarily funded through a licence fee paid by UK households, has seen its income from this source decline in real terms in recent years. At the same time, traditional television viewership has been steadily eroded by on-demand streaming services, prompting questions about the long-term viability of its funding model.
The latest downsizing also comes amid ongoing negotiations with the UK government over the renewal of the broadcaster’s royal charter, which will determine its future funding structure and operational framework. Media regulators have already warned that public service broadcasting in the UK faces significant challenges in the digital era, with audiences increasingly shifting away from traditional platforms.
If implemented, the cuts will represent the most significant restructuring at the BBC since 2011, underscoring the scale of transformation underway at one of the world’s most prominent public broadcasters as it seeks to remain relevant in a fast-evolving media environment.
