The entire prize pool for this year’s British Open has increased by 22 percent to $14 million, with the winner set to get $2.5 million, according to the tournament’s organizers, the Royal and Ancient Golf Club of St. Andrews (R&A).
The 150th British Open will be held in St. Andrews, and it is anticipated to bring a record-breaking 290,000.
The PGA Tour announced greater prizes for the 2022–2023 season in reaction to the lucrative LIV Invitational Series, which prompted the rise in prize money.
Seven out of the eight events in the Saudi-sponsored series will give purses of $25 million, while the series finale will offer a $50 million prize pool.
According to R&A CEO Martin Slumbers, “there have been considerable adjustments in prize money during the last year.” “We have thus boosted the prize fund by 22%, making the prize money more than 60% higher since 2016 than it was.
We made this significant investment while juggling our larger responsibilities to improving the AIG Women’s Open and advancing golf at all levels worldwide.
In the event that more than 70 professional golfers make the cut for the final two rounds, the sport’s oldest competition will increase their prize pool even more.
British Open purses have typically been lower than those of the other three majors, with the U.S. Open this year paying $17.5 million and the U.S. Masters and PGA Championship both offering $15 million.
The competition will take place from July 14–17.
