A recent survey revealed that most Canadians oppose the activities of the pro-Khalistan movement in their country, with nearly 75% favoring policies to prevent such agendas from taking root.
The poll, conducted by Leger, found that only 10% of respondents support Sikh separatist activities in Canada, while 54% are against them. Additionally, 72% back stricter measures to curb foreign separatist movements on Canadian soil. Among those who oppose the movement, 37% strongly reject it, whereas only 2% of supporters express strong backing.
The survey aimed to assess public sentiment regarding allegations of Indian interference in Canada’s internal affairs. Over half (53%) were aware of these claims, and 68% expressed concern over potential foreign influence.
Additionally, 30% of Canadians believe Sikh-Canadians face undue scrutiny due to the actions of a small separatist faction, while 33% disagree and 37% remain uncertain.
On Tuesday, a foreign interference inquiry report alleged that India is the second most active country involved in electoral meddling in Canada, following China. The inquiry, led by Justice Marie-Josée Hogue, identified India as a significant global player but noted that it has legitimate concerns regarding Khalistani extremism.
According to the Canadian Security Intelligence Service (CSIS), India has reasons to be wary of security threats from some extremists in Canada who have coordinated and funded terrorist activities in India. However, the agency emphasized that most Khalistan supporters are peaceful. The report also pointed out that India does not seem to distinguish between lawful pro-Khalistan political advocacy and a small group of violent extremists operating in Canada.
