China’s economic slowdown, shrinking job opportunities and the growing use of artificial intelligence are leaving a generation of young people struggling to turn years of education into stable careers, raising concerns about the country’s future workforce and social stability.
A growing number of young Chinese graduates are finding it increasingly difficult to achieve the financial security and upward mobility that previous generations associated with academic success. With companies cutting jobs, salaries stagnating and competition intensifying, many are delaying major life decisions, including marriage, parenthood and moving out of their family homes.
The challenges reflect a broader shift in an economy that once offered expanding opportunities to young professionals. While millions were encouraged to pursue higher education in the belief that good grades and university degrees would lead to well-paying jobs, the employment market has struggled to absorb the growing number of graduates.
China recorded a record 12.7 million college graduates in 2026, adding to the pressure on an already competitive job market. The mismatch between the number of qualified candidates and the availability of suitable jobs has left many young people questioning whether their educational investments will deliver the expected returns.
The rapid adoption of artificial intelligence is adding another layer of uncertainty. Technology companies and businesses across sectors are increasingly using automation to improve efficiency, while some employers are reducing recruitment for entry-level positions. This has intensified concerns among graduates who previously viewed careers in software engineering, finance and other professional fields as relatively secure.
Major technology companies, including Alibaba and ByteDance, have reportedly reduced their workforces. Although companies have not publicly attributed all such reductions to AI, the technology is emerging as a factor influencing hiring decisions across several industries, including finance and filmmaking.
The employment crisis is particularly visible among young urban residents. China’s unemployment rate for people aged 16 to 24, excluding students, stood at approximately 19% in August, while the rate for those aged 25 to 29 was around 7.5%. Both figures highlight the difficulties facing younger workers compared with the country’s overall unemployment rate of about 5%.
The slowdown in the property sector has further complicated the situation. Real estate was once an important source of employment for graduates in fields such as architecture, administration and business management. The industry’s prolonged downturn has resulted in job losses and reduced recruitment, forcing many workers to look for opportunities elsewhere.
Other sectors that previously employed large numbers of graduates have also experienced changes. Restrictions on parts of the private tutoring industry, weak consumer demand and pressure on businesses to control costs have limited opportunities for young professionals. Although China is investing heavily in advanced manufacturing, robotics and other technology-driven industries, these sectors may not create enough jobs to accommodate the expanding graduate population.
The consequences extend beyond employment. Many young people are finding it difficult to establish independent lives as wages remain under pressure and stable jobs become harder to secure. Some are returning to their parents’ homes or relying on family support while searching for work. Others are turning to temporary employment and gig-based jobs that offer limited security.
The uncertainty is also influencing personal relationships and family planning. Young couples who cannot establish stable incomes are postponing marriage and having children, as the costs associated with housing and raising a family remain significant concerns.
China’s leadership has encouraged businesses to embrace artificial intelligence as part of its strategy to strengthen economic competitiveness. However, the potential impact of automation on employment has also prompted concern among policymakers. Authorities have reportedly cautioned companies against excessive job cuts as they introduce AI into their operations.
The growing disillusionment among young people presents a longer-term challenge for the country. A generation raised to believe that education and hard work would guarantee a better standard of living is increasingly confronting uncertain career prospects and limited financial independence.
For now, many are responding by lowering expectations, postponing life decisions or stepping away temporarily from the intense competition of urban professional life. However, economists and observers warn that persistent unemployment and declining confidence in future opportunities could have wider consequences for China’s economic growth and social stability.
The central challenge for Beijing will be to ensure that its economic transformation creates sufficient employment opportunities alongside technological advancement. Without stronger demand for workers, better prospects for graduates and renewed confidence in economic mobility, the country risks leaving a substantial section of its younger generation unable to realise the ambitions that once defined China’s growth story.
