Chinese companies are rapidly expanding their manufacturing presence across different parts of the world, creating a broader and more deeply integrated network of factories and suppliers that is beginning to alter the structure of global production. The shift is particularly visible in emerging industrial hubs, where Chinese investment is helping build factories, ports and supporting infrastructure while enabling manufacturers to establish production closer to overseas markets.
One prominent example is Ain Sokhna on Egypt’s Gulf of Suez, where Chinese investment has transformed the area into an increasingly important manufacturing centre. A growing number of factories have been established there, producing products ranging from fibreglass to electrical equipment. A new port terminal, financed by Chinese logistics companies COSCO and CK Hutchinson, also began operations earlier this year, strengthening the industrial zone’s links with international trade routes.
Ain Sokhna is part of the wider Suez Canal Economic Zone, which includes industrial parks and ports stretching towards the Mediterranean. China has emerged as a major investor in the zone, accounting for roughly half of the investment attracted in recent years. The trend, however, is not limited to Egypt or North Africa. Chinese-backed industrial projects are increasingly appearing in countries including Saudi Arabia, Hungary, Brazil and Indonesia, reflecting a wider effort by Chinese businesses to establish manufacturing bases across multiple regions.
The scale of the overseas expansion has increased significantly in recent years. Chinese companies have invested more than $200 billion in overseas factories during the past three years alone, according to the report. The change is not simply about moving individual factories abroad. Chinese supply chains are becoming geographically wider, with major production centres emerging in several parts of the world. At the same time, the networks are becoming more closely connected as suppliers move alongside major manufacturers and recreate the industrial ecosystems that have long supported production inside China.
Another important feature of the expansion is the increasing concentration on strategically important industries. Chinese companies are establishing overseas manufacturing capacity in sectors such as electric vehicles, clean energy and equipment used in data centres. This means the development could have consequences extending beyond traditional trade and manufacturing, particularly as governments around the world seek to secure supply chains for technologies considered essential to future economic growth.
Several factors are encouraging Chinese companies to accelerate their international expansion. Domestic manufacturers are facing weak consumer demand and intense competition within China, making overseas markets increasingly attractive. Establishing factories abroad can allow companies to move closer to consumers, reduce transportation costs and gain access to growing markets.
Trade policy is another major factor behind the shift. Tariffs imposed during the second administration of US President Donald Trump have encouraged Chinese manufacturers to consider production locations where exports face lower duties. Rather than relying exclusively on established manufacturing hubs, companies are increasingly spreading their operations across countries that offer more favourable trade conditions.
The development represents a significant change from the earlier model of globalisation, in which China served primarily as the central manufacturing base for a large share of the world’s goods. Chinese companies are now increasingly taking their production capabilities, suppliers and industrial networks overseas. This could make global manufacturing more diversified geographically while simultaneously increasing China’s influence over international industrial supply chains.
For countries receiving Chinese investment, the expansion can bring factories, employment, infrastructure and new trade opportunities. Ports and industrial parks can also help strengthen local manufacturing ecosystems and connect emerging economies more closely with global markets. At the same time, the growing role of Chinese companies in strategically important industries is likely to attract greater scrutiny from governments concerned about economic dependence, trade imbalances and supply-chain security.
The result is an evolving global manufacturing landscape in which Chinese companies are no longer simply exporting finished goods from factories at home. Increasingly, they are building production networks across continents, bringing manufacturers and their suppliers into new industrial clusters. The accelerating overseas investment therefore points to a broader rewiring of global supply chains, with Chinese companies playing a central role in determining where and how the next generation of manufactured products is produced.
