Due to disciplinary issues, including the “usage of medication,” Australian swimmer Isaac Cooper was expelled from a training camp and will not compete in the Commonwealth Games, according to the national governing organization Swimming Australia on Wednesday.
The 18-year-old Cooper was scheduled to compete in the backstroke, butterfly, and freestyle events in Birmingham, which get underway next week. Cooper recently won a mixed medley silver at the global championships in Budapest.
Due to various health issues, including the use of medication, Cooper has been sent home from the Dolphins training camp, SA stated.
Swimming Australia will support him as he faces these obstacles since “he has admitted his errors and accepted the consequences.”
Cooper took home a bronze medal with Australia’s 4×100-meter mixed medley team at the 2016 Summer Olympics in Tokyo.
Australia has a history of penalizing swimmers for pharmaceutical abuse.
Five other swimmers on Australia’s 4x100m freestyle relay team, including former world champion James Magnussen, were also fined in 2013 after it was discovered during an investigation into team dynamics that they had engaged in an unofficial “bonding session” involving the use of a prohibited sleeping aid.
