Walt Disney World has announced the permanent closure of three long-standing attractions at its Magic Kingdom park—Rivers of America, Tom Sawyer Island, and the Liberty Square Riverboat—effective July 7, 2025. These iconic features, which have been a part of the park for over five decades, are being shut down to make way for the largest expansion in Magic Kingdom’s history. The new development will introduce “Piston Peak National Park,” an immersive land inspired by the world of Disney Pixar’s “Cars” and “Planes: Fire & Rescue.”
Disney’s vision for the new attraction combines a national park-inspired landscape with modern design elements. Visitors can expect features such as waterfalls, forest trails, geysers, and mountain backdrops, as well as two new themed rides—one for thrill-seekers and another tailored for younger children. The new area aims to preserve the spirit of Frontierland while bringing in fresh energy and storytelling.
The announcement, however, has sparked strong reactions among Disney fans. Many took to social media to express their disappointment and nostalgia, labeling the decision as a major misstep. Some called it “the largest mistake in the company’s history,” while others declared they would cancel planned trips or reconsider future visits.
The abruptness of the announcement, with just a month’s notice, added to the frustration of guests hoping for one last chance to experience the attractions. Longtime visitors lamented the loss of the riverboat and island experience, both of which were tied closely to Walt Disney’s original vision for the park and its Americana-inspired themes.
On the other hand, a segment of the fanbase welcomed the change, especially families with young children familiar with the Cars franchise. Enthusiastic parents shared that their kids were thrilled at the prospect of Piston Peak coming to life. Supporters praised Disney for maintaining some of the water features and naturalistic feel of the original attractions, which will be integrated into the new landscape. They see the project as a creative reimagining rather than a loss.
This expansion is just one of several large-scale changes coming to Magic Kingdom. Disney also plans to debut a new nighttime parade, “Disney Starlight: Dream the Night Away,” on July 20, and open a Pirates of the Caribbean–themed lounge later this year. Additionally, a Disney Villains–themed land is in the pipeline, promising new rides, dining, and shopping experiences. As Disney transforms its park for a new generation, the closure of these three historic attractions marks the end of an era and the beginning of a bold new chapter in its storytelling legacy.
