The Earth is being driven into a state of dangerous imbalance, with scientists warning that the planet’s energy system has reached record levels of disruption, intensifying global warming and its cascading impacts on ecosystems, food security and human health.
According to the latest global climate assessment by the World Meteorological Organization (WMO), the imbalance between incoming solar energy and the heat radiated back into space has grown sharply in recent decades, largely due to human activity such as burning fossil fuels and deforestation. This imbalance, described as a key indicator of climate change, has been accumulating since at least the mid-20th century but is now accelerating at an unprecedented pace.
The report highlights that between 2015 and 2025, the world experienced its 11 hottest years on record, underscoring the rapid intensification of global heating. Yet, scientists caution that the rise in surface temperatures represents only a small fraction of the total heat being trapped within the Earth system. In fact, just about 1% of the excess heat directly warms the atmosphere, while more than 90% is absorbed by the oceans, which have recorded their highest heat content to date.
This vast accumulation of heat in the oceans is particularly concerning, as it not only drives more intense weather events but also locks in long-term changes to the climate. Researchers note that ocean warming has more than doubled over the past two decades compared to earlier periods, contributing to rising sea levels, coral bleaching, and disruptions in marine ecosystems.
The imbalance itself has been quantified in the report, showing an average annual increase of about 11 zettajoules between 2005 and 2025—an enormous figure equivalent to roughly 18 times the total energy consumed by humanity. Alarmingly, last year’s increase was more than double that average, indicating a sharp acceleration.
Scientists attribute this growing disparity to record concentrations of greenhouse gases such as carbon dioxide, methane and nitrous oxide, now at their highest levels in at least 800,000 years. These gases trap heat within the atmosphere, preventing it from escaping into space and thereby upsetting the planet’s natural energy equilibrium.
The consequences are already visible across the globe. Extreme weather events—including heatwaves, wildfires and storms—are becoming more frequent and severe, while agricultural systems are under strain and the spread of climate-sensitive diseases is increasing. Global leaders have also acknowledged that the Paris Agreement target of limiting warming to 1.5°C above pre-industrial levels is likely to be breached, at least temporarily.
Further compounding concerns, climate patterns such as the transition from La Niña to El Niño later this year could push global temperatures even higher, potentially setting new records. Scientists warn that as more heat penetrates deeper into the oceans, its effects could persist for centuries, making the crisis increasingly difficult to reverse.
UN Secretary-General António Guterres described the situation as a “state of emergency,” stressing that every major climate indicator is flashing red. The findings serve as a stark reminder that without urgent and sustained reductions in emissions, the planet may continue to move further beyond safe environmental limits, with consequences that could reshape life on Earth for generations.
