Boeing is facing renewed scrutiny over the safety and manufacturing quality of its aircraft after the US Federal Aviation Administration (FAA) ordered inspections of hundreds of 737 MAX jets following concerns linked to cracks in fuselage structures. The latest development has once again placed the American aircraft manufacturer under the spotlight and revived questions about its quality-control systems, particularly after a series of safety-related incidents involving Boeing aircraft in recent years.
The FAA’s latest action involves inspections of certain Boeing 737 MAX aircraft because of concerns that a structural issue identified in older 737 Next Generation (NG) aircraft could potentially affect newer versions that use similar design and manufacturing features. According to regulatory documents, cracks had previously been identified in parts of the fuselage structure of 737NG aircraft. Although no cracks had been reported in the corresponding areas of 737 MAX aircraft, regulators determined that the similarities warranted preventive inspections.
The inspections are intended to detect possible cracking before it develops into a more serious structural problem. Aviation regulators have emphasised that such precautionary inspections are an important part of maintaining airworthiness and preventing structural defects from becoming safety hazards. The FAA’s action does not mean that the entire 737 MAX fleet has been found to have structural cracks. Rather, it reflects the regulator’s decision to examine aircraft that could potentially be susceptible to a condition previously detected on related models.
The latest concern adds to a long list of challenges faced by Boeing, whose reputation for aircraft safety has come under intense pressure since the 737 MAX crisis. The aircraft became the centre of global aviation attention after two fatal crashes involving 737 MAX 8 jets. Lion Air Flight 610 crashed in Indonesia in October 2018, while Ethiopian Airlines Flight 302 crashed in March 2019. A total of 346 people were killed in the two accidents, resulting in the worldwide grounding of the 737 MAX fleet for about 20 months. Investigations subsequently focused on the aircraft’s Maneuvering Characteristics Augmentation System, or MCAS, as well as issues surrounding its design, certification and pilot training.
Boeing subsequently introduced changes to the aircraft and its flight-control systems before the MAX was gradually returned to commercial service. However, the manufacturer continued to face questions over its manufacturing processes and oversight of suppliers.
Those concerns intensified in January 2024, when an Alaska Airlines Boeing 737 MAX 9 suffered the in-flight separation of a door plug shortly after take-off. Investigators found that several bolts intended to secure the door plug were missing. The incident prompted additional scrutiny of Boeing’s production practices, quality-control procedures and oversight of work carried out both inside Boeing facilities and by suppliers. Congressional and aviation investigations subsequently examined whether weaknesses in Boeing’s manufacturing and supplier-management systems had contributed to the incident.
The latest fuselage inspection issue therefore comes at a sensitive time for Boeing, as the company continues efforts to rebuild confidence among regulators, airlines, pilots and passengers. The manufacturer has repeatedly stated that safety and quality remain its priorities, while regulators have increased their oversight of Boeing’s production and certification processes.
The FAA’s approach also highlights the importance of detecting structural problems at an early stage. Aircraft fuselage components are critical to maintaining the integrity of the passenger cabin, and undetected cracking can potentially weaken structural elements over time. Regulatory documents have noted that certain types of structural deterioration, if left unaddressed, could affect an aircraft’s ability to withstand required loads and, in extreme circumstances, compromise structural integrity.
For Boeing, the latest inspections represent another test of its efforts to strengthen quality assurance across its manufacturing operations and supply chain. The company’s 737 family remains one of the most widely used commercial aircraft series in the world, making effective inspection and maintenance procedures particularly important for the global aviation industry.
While the FAA’s latest action is precautionary and does not indicate that the inspected MAX aircraft have been found to contain the same cracks identified in older aircraft, it nevertheless underscores the continuing regulatory attention surrounding Boeing. The company’s ability to address such concerns quickly and transparently will be closely watched as it seeks to restore the level of confidence it enjoyed before the series of safety and manufacturing controversies that have affected its reputation over the past several years.
